children listed in that 1880 were 2 of her kids, Julia L. 18 GA and Charles Kitchens 14 GA, his son James Brooks 14 GA and I suppose their kids Jesse 7 AR, Franklin (?may be grandson Frank L. Kitchens b. Nov 1877 Batesville AR), Martha 6, and a William no dates.
This family prob. moved to Red River and Lamar Co TX in the 1880's or 1890's according to Frank L. Kitchens obituary in Lamar Co and Red River co. TX newspaper. There is a J O Brooks death record in Lamar Co TX for Nov 18, 1905 but I don't know for sure if it's the same man.
I desc. from a brother not in 1880 census with them, Henry Lee Obe Kitchens but is in the 1870 with his sister and brother for Covington Newton Co GA and parents are in the 1860 Newton Co GA census. Charles Bartholomew Kitchens was their dad and they split up after civil war, he remarried and was in Tarrant Co TX by the 1870 census and died in Hart OK in 1905.
I have desc. outline of both C B Kitchens families with the exception of Charles Kitchens b. about 1866.
Am interested in these Brooks children Elizabeth C. Lumsden Kitchens Brooks gave birth to.

Query: Recently, through contact with Stephany (stephanysmith@home.com), I
received a copy of an autobiography of Alvin Brooks. It has a lot of
interesting information, little of which has been verified. In the
interest of getting information out to those who are interested, I have,
with Stephany's permission, summarized the information in this document
in the hopes that you will find something useful, at least in the way of
clues, and - if you have substantiating information - that you will send
it to both of us.
Alvin Brooks was born in 1807, in Otisco, Onondaga Co. NY. His father
was Shubael Brooks (b 1770/1 d 1833 age 61) and his mother, Mary Peck.
They were born in CT., and married in NY in 1794, settling in West
Moreland Co.
Alvin had siblings Russel, Eunice, Louisa, Norman, Rhoda, Orval, and
Alphonso (my gggrandfather).
In about 1817/18 they moved to Genesee Co. NY and lived there for 10
or 11 years. His mother, Mary, died in 1818 at the age of 57.
The family then moved to Aurora, Erie Co, where Alvin married Sallie
Carr in Dec.1831. Their children were Sophrona (b 1832), Gilmon (b May
1833), and Alphonso (b 1836? d Oct 15 1856, age 20)..
Sallie ran away several times and eventually stayed gone, leaving
Alvin with the three children.
In possibly 1838 they moved to Erie, Whiteside Co. IL, where he
married Dorcas Barney on May 16 1839. They had a child, Ruth Eliza (b
May 16 1840). Dorcas died Sept. 10, 1840. Ruth Eliza died July 24 1841?
In Feb. 1841 he married Phoebe Freer and they produced five sons and
three daughters (no names). A daughter Minerva Jane died on Mar. 29 1849
(age 3 mos.)
In Oct 1867 they moved to Kansas, ending up on the Republican (river?)

This autobiography was written when Alvin was 63 years of age,
probably in 1870 or 71.
Some of the dates are derived from narrative, some were given. There
are small inconsistencies in some of the dates, something not unusual in
our experience. The autobiography contains interesting narrative about
Alvin's life.
If this fits into the research you are doing we would really like to
hear from you. Using the above information as clues, I have tentatively
tracked his father, Shubael, back to Killingly, Middlesex Co, CT, and to
a couple of generations before him. The data is murkey because there are
quite a few Brooks families there in the early 1700s, and some names
show up in several families. (N.B. The IGI listing for Shubael appears
to be incorrect in its listing of parents and siblings. A couple of
birthdates and birthplaces conflict.
We would be interested in hearing from anyone with information.

His wife, Mahala Brooks was married to a man named McCain before her marriage to George Brooks. LAFAYETTE FRANKLIN BROOKS (or possibly FRANKLIN LAFAYETTE BROOKS) was my great-grandfather. May have been nick-named "Lafe" or "Frank/Frankie."

He and his wife ADDIE SNYDER had at least one child, KATHRYN BROOKS, who was born about 1898-1900 in Madison, IN (southern part of state). On Kathryn's birth record, her father is listed as having worked in a foundry. According to family stories, he later worked for his father-in-law in the Snyder Grocery Store. I do not have any other information on him - I would like to know any information about him, his parents, siblings, birth dates & places, etc.

Based on Kathryn's birth date of 1898-1900, her father LAFAYETTE FRANKLIN BROOKS was probably born before 1880. He died sometime before 1924. So far as I know, he was in the Madison, IN area from the date of Kathryn's birth until his death. I have no idea whether he or his people were from Madison, IN before the birth of Kathryn.

Query: My husband Henry is the youngest child of Charlie Elmer Wesley Brooks, DOB 2/20/1903 in Dallas County, Texas. I am a descendant of Jesse and Miranda (Fox) Brooks. Miranda was the daughter of Stephen Fox and Sarah Andrews, also of Glastonbury, CT. Jesse and Miranda lived in CT for the first few years of their marriage before moving to NY (possibly Chenago Co., NY) where they lived for about 12 years. Jesse and family eventually moved further west, ending up in Coldwater, Branch County, MI where they were one of the first families to found the town.

I have no information concerning Josiah's parents or siblings. I am certain that he was born and lived all his life in Glastonbury. There are two other Brooks' listed in the 1790 Census of Connecticut which list a Samuel Brooks and a Samuel Brooks, Jr. Not only are all three men on the same page but, I have found evidence of a Samuel Brooks in and around Glastonbury CT in the 1740s. Could the earlier Samuel be Josiah's grandfather or father?

Query: My Dad, deceased 1997, was the youngest of 7 sons born to Kenneth A. Cameron and Virginia Grace Brooks Cameron. Virginia was born 8/31/1892, D-11/27/1976. Her father was George Philip Brooks 1845-1898, married Sue Read. George P. was son of Strange Brooks from Scotland, wife (?) His obit. from the Daily Sentinal, OK,12/21/1913 reads that; he passed in his sleep on 12/20/1913 5:20pm at 91yrs. He was a vet of the Civil War, belonged to the Masonic order for over 70 yrs. He died at the home of his daughter, Clara Brooks Harper (at one time lived in Chicago and Grand Junction, Colorado), who resided at 916 N. 5th St. "in the city".
Another daughter was Miss Ollie Brooks, (a spinster), another daughter, Mrs. C.S. Freake from Ohio, a son, Rev. Joseph Brooks of Eagle, OK, (and my gr-grandfather) George Brooks. Rev. Strange Brooks was a "fighting Chaplin" in the Civil War. He was born at Washington Court House, OH, he was a minister of Cogregation Church, and a survivor of Lawrence Massacre. (The story is that he acquired a scalp laceration, but survived by hiding in a corn field while Quantrills James Band raiders burned his home. His wife died shortly thereafter. He was also a vet of the Missouri/Kansas Border war.) His father was James Brooks, son of Benjamine Brooks. Strange's wife, (?name), apparently thru family records reflect she was his second wife, (no info. on first wife), but she (thru family records), was step-mom to Ollie, who was very fraile. Ollie died in Lawrence, Ks. Ben Brooks, (g-g-g-g grandfather?), moved from PA to Chillicothe, OH neighborhood in 1800, lived there for 1 yr., then moved to Highland, OH. The family record reads; 3 young men, Ben Brooks, James Brooks, and another brother, (?), and several girls. Capt. James Brooks worked for Gen. Massie's Surveying Co. as a hunter, Cousin Strange was named for his grandfather Strange Brooks, who in turn had been named for his English Grandmother, (?) Strange, from VA. George P. Brooks,(my g-grandfather) had a brother Joseph, a Reverend, had two sons; Strange and Hal, and another brother, William, wife May (?) had two children, Louie and Zoe, and lived in Grand Junction, Colorado around 1897. He had another brother, Frank Brooks, who was a professor at Kansas University, who married Fannie (?), they had 4 children, Jean, Frederick, Florence and Harry. Frank Brooks died of tuberculosis, apparently originatin from a hit in the chest from a baseball. Frank was from Grand Junction, Col. George P. Brooks married a Sue Read Brooks, daughter of Eli Hugh Read, who married Jane Workman (b.6/21/1847). I believe she moved to Winstead (?), "near Uncle Will". Sue Read Brooks had a brother,(uncle?), Hugh who married Julie LeMasters; she b:8/1898. Hugh and Julie had one daughter, Ina. Sue also had an uncle Michael Read, who married Susan, who Sue Read was named after. Sue Read Brooks had a twin sister, and were from Richmond, VA. It was told that she "preferred riding and target practicing to sewing". Her father, Eli Hugh Read, in 1887 built a business building in Syracuse, KS. He also owned a general store in Dexter,KS, owned a grist mill in Olney, Ill., and died aged 53 yrs. Before his death, he owned Tri-State Ranch which encompassed parts of three states, "Grand Junction, Col., at the conversion of the Grand and Gunison Rivers, 14 miles from the Utah line." This was quite a large ranch as the story goes, having thousands of head of cattle. Some relative (?name unknown) signed the Declaration of Independence. It is also believed that these Brooks/Read were helpers with the 'underground railroad'. Also in family records, "info on Brooks and Strange families can be found in the Akron, OH library, look for book of Early Settlement of Ohio, collected and reprinted by Highland Gazette 1890. Does anyone else have info. on these Brooks?

Query: I am searching for the origins of Spencer Brooks. I stress the word origin as I have a pretty good handle on his descendants. We first see Spencer Brooks in Winnebago, Ill on May 17 1841 getting married to Sylvia Hemenway. Spencer is my GGrandfather on my mother’s side of the family. Most of the US Census note that his origin is New York with the exception of the 1910 census which notes he is from Scotland. Spencer’s birth is either 1820 or 1823 depending on what reference you want to believe. Therefore, he was either 18 or 21 when he married. He died in 1857 again either at the hands of the Indians on the plains of Kansas or Texas or on his ranch in Winnebago, Ill. Spencer and Sylvia had five children, Oliver Spencer, Melissa, Melintha, Lorenzo Nathaniel and William Henry. Oliver had one son and two daughters, Edmon Oliver, Ida and Cora. Lorenzo had no children. William had eight children Edward, Josephine, William, Robert, Arthur Walter, Clarence and Roy. However, only Clarence had any children. Edmon, also, had a son Alphonsus Oliver born 1899, whereabouts unknown. Clarence had two sons, both living. As one can see Spencer Brooks direct descendants are down to two or three offspring depending on the outcome for the search for Alphonsus who is my Uncle. My mother Anna Marie Brooks was estranged from her family at birth, therefore the search for Spencer Brooks has been from scratch. Any help will be appreciated on the origins of Spencer or the whereabouts of Alphonsus.
