The dates on which the Gregorian calendar was adopted vary widely: France, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands, 1582; the Catholic states of Germany, 1584; Poland, 1586; Hungary, 1587; the Protestant states of Germany and Switzerland, 1700; England and Sweden, 1752; China, 1912; Russia, 1917; Greece, 1923; and Turkey, 1928. Colonies used the same calendar as their mother countries.

The Dutch in New Netherland never used the Julian calendar, having adopted the Gregorian calendar before they came over to America, and they continued using the Gregorian calendar in their private correspondence even after the English took over.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Paul L. Nichols, 1475 Yountville Crs. Rd., Napa, CA 94558 writes, "Thanks to you and The Brooks Family Query Exchange for Aug., 1980, I now have my family group record on Henry Brooks (b.1591). You have very neatly typed it on pages 14 and 15. I am a descendant of Henry's daughter, Mary, who married 1650 Richard Norcross, son of Jeremiah. Since your family group record on Henry cannot be improved upon, as far as I can see, I have not redone it. So please consider it my entry for my oldest family group record of Brooks. My compliments to you and to John Brooks Threlfall on the August issue."

Jane Brooks Kaskela, 6 Jessica Place, Whitesboro, NY 13492 writes, "I have received a gift subscription to The BrooksFamilyQuery Exchange and am delighted to be a sub-scriber. This type of publication, I believe, is bound to be helpful to a great many people, particularly in view of the fact that municipalities, in my experience, are increasingly reluctant to do records searching for us amateur genealogists, and personal visits to scattered locations are often out of the question."

Mrs. Norma S. Keating, 4653 Ave. Rio Del Oro, Yorba Linda, CA 92686 writes, "I'm enjoying The Brooks Family QueryExchange very much and have made several contacts with possible kin. It's really exciting to find new family and new information."

Helen B. Todd, P.O. Box 555, Branson, MO 65616 writes, "I have read each issue from cover to cover and really enjoy the publication."

Mrs. Doris F. Macomber, 65 Farmfield St., Fairhaven, MA 02719 writes, "Thank you both so much, Jeffrey and Karen. The BrooksFamilyQueryExchange is a pleasure to read, and I am so grateful to receive it. I enclose some random notes which you might be able to use."

Miriam Jones, P.O. Box 122, Eagleville, MO 64442 writes, "My second copy of The Brooks Family Query Exchange came today. I am so pleased with the wonderful job you are doing."

Mrs. Phyllis Kendall, Box 667, Crockett, TX 75835 writes, "I'm so pleased to be receiving "Brooks Exchange." It really is an asset for the family, decidedly of a finer quality than most quarterly publications."

Mrs. H. Jack Layne, Central Texas Genealogical Society Librarian, Waco, TX writes, "Thank you for your gift of The BrooksFamilyQuery Exchange. It will be placed in the genealogical section of the Waco-McLennan County Library. Our genealogical collection is one of the largest in Texas; the "traffic" is heavy, thereby making your "Brooks Family" available to many."

NATURALIZATION

Originally, each state handled its own unique naturalization procedure, but in 1790 the federal government passed legislation for uniform naturalization procedures that made white males citizens of every state. The period of waiting time between arrival and application for citizenship varied from two to fourteen years. In 1801, the waiting time was set at five years, the period required today. After 1802, the applicant had to prove that he had entered the country legally and many application forms give information as to the date of arrival and the port of entry. Although the specific place of origin may sometimes appear on the form, it often lists only the country, the largest city near by, or the port from which the boat departed.

BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT

The Bateman Connection written by Bradley B. Ridge is a painstakingly documented record of the descendants of a distinguished New England family with English antecedents. It has been researched and assembled by a scholar intimately associated with that family, who brings to the subject a thoroughly grounded knowledge of genealogy and the behavioral sciences. The volume explores the nature and extent of its dispersal in the mainstream of American life from its base p points in Concord, Massachusetts, Killingly, Connecticut and Fairfield (Bridgeton), New Jersey. It also provides a list of references to published English sources by shire on the surname Bateman.

The volume is composed of three indexes: the first index is a detailed listing by given name of each of the known Bateman descendants of William Bateman. Also provided in each case for reference are the names of father, grandfather and great grandfather. The second index is a list of Bateman wives by first name facilitating research from other family groups. The surname of the wife is included where known. The third index is that of the standard cross reference surname variety which is indispensable in a genealogical reference book.

There are some 194 pages of text showing birth, marriage, death and burial dates and places, as well as the available information on names associated with wills, inventories and administrations. The book contains pedigree charts, and concludes with a 63-page two-column surname index.

Martha, daughter of Henry Brooks of Concord, Massachusetts, married Thomas Bateman. There are numerous Brooks listed in the book.

Price is $30.00 postpaid. California residents please add 6% sales tax. You may

order this book from the following address: Bradley B. Ridge, Railing Hall, 1200
