The Brooks Historical Archive

The Brooks Surname Historical Archive is dedicated to the preservation of genealogical and historical information relating to the Brook, Brooke, Brooks, Brookes, and all other variations of the 'BROOKS' surname and their related family lines.

The official publication of the Brooks Surname Historical Archive is the BROOKS HISTORIAN, a quarterly publication containing  research data and queries for the benefit of the friends of the Brooks Historical Archive.

The Brooks Historian quarterly newsletter had it's beginnings in Lexington, MO, in 1972, by a young man named Jeffery P. Brooks. In 1980 the stewardship of the organization (then known as the Brooks Family Bulletin) was passed to Karen Rocher of Ft. Scott, Kansas. The publication name was changed to The Brooks Family Query Exchange and an organization was established as The Brooks Historical Society and Library. Karen published the magazine until Feb. of 1982 when she passed the editorship to Madeline S. Mills of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Due to difficulties  Madeline was unable to continue publication and passed it on to Hays Brooks of Millersville, MD. Hays Brooks worked on it until 1989.  In 1991 He began it anew with Madeline S. Mills. At that time the current name The BROOKS HISTORIAN was adopted. In Oct of 1992 the publication and Library was transferred to me, Bill Brooks of Vista, CA. I continued the quarterly for 4 years and passed it on to Dixie Judge of Minden/Gardnerville, Nevada. Dixie published it until 1998 where she discontinued the publication due to falling membership. Dixie Judge, Virginia Lewis and Madeline Mills have contributed the entire Library and the holding of the organization to the Church of the Latter Day Saints,  (The Mormons) Family History Center in Salt Lake, Utah.
(Apparently they have no more interest in the organization or it's holdings.)  Any materials that she had, can be located there in Salt Lake, (so I am told).

I intend to create a new organization out of the old. I don't believe the research for BROOKS ancestors is finished.... It's only just begun.

The Brooks Historian is published 4 times a year - Jan, Apr, Jul., & Nov. The Brooks Historian was available only by volume (1 year/4 issues). Reprints of the Brooks Historian, The Brooks Query Exchange, or the Brooks Family Bulletin are available from 1972 to date except for the years it was not in print. We are currently preserving the data, so carefully saved for future generations to enjoy, on-line.

The Brooks Historical Archive and its officers (me for now) can not be responsible or in any way guarantee the accuracy of contributed information appearing in the Brooks Historian, however, every effort is and was made to strive for accuracy and authenticity. The Brooks Historian cannot be responsible for the publishing rights of material furnished by our contributors.

This web site was established 1-22-99 (by me) as a meeting point for the active and inactive members of the BROOKS FAMILY HISTORICAL SOCIETY and anyone else who has an interest in BROOKS Genealogy or the related surnames, descendants and ancestors of the BROOKS surname. This site is maintained by me. I am solely responsible for it's upkeep and what content I choose to put online.

Greetings to all BROOKS related genealogists and researchers. I am really excited to bring you the first electronically produced BROOKS HISTORIAN NEWSLETTER!  It's been a long time coming. I am happy to announce that I will continue to do this as long as I am able. (Hopefully that will be for a long time.)

Many of you have visited the BROOKS HISTORIAN on-line and have found the resources there helpful in furthering your research for your ancestors. I want to let you know that it's a fun project, and I am having a great time doing it. (So, far it has only cost me the internet  access fee of 12.00 a month and I hope it has been a beneficial service to all who have come here.)
Volunteers to help with the maintenance of the website and developers who wish to donate artwork, photo's, articles, or web pages...  and contributors ...you are welcome here!

Our special thanks goes to Lena Peters for all her help in scanning in Back Issues for the website. We never could have come so far without you and your help. Thank You!

As always, I answer my e-mails, keep in touch.

BATTLE HYMN OF BROOKS

(Tune: "Battle Hymn of the Republic")

There's something strong and mighty in a good old family name;
The name of Brooks shines very high upon the scroll of fame;
For nearly all the Tribe of Brooks pursue a lofty aim.
The clan goes marching on!

Chorus: Glory to our grand old family, Virile, worthy, brave
and loyal! "Ut Am-nis vi-ta la-bi-tur!" The clan goes
marching on!

William, Henry, Thomas, James were fathers of our clan;
Posterity of David and Nathaniel never ran;
Samuel Brooks was virile, Maurice was a sturdy man.
The clan goes marching on!

David was a hero and of Washington a friend;
Phillips was a wise man whom the world could comprehend;
William fought and gave his life, his country to defend.
The clan goes marching on!

The Clan of Brooks is mighty with two hundred thousand strong;
In seventy-six, five hundred kinsmen fought to right a wrong;
Twenty towns now bear our name. Sure, let us sing that song--
The clan goes marching on!

When danger threatened country or a battle to be won,
Or righteous causes need defenders or work to be done,
Brave sons of Brooks were there, and never did a kinsman run.
The clan goes marching on!

The sons of Brooks have courage any task or foe to face;
Our daughters all are lovely with their beauty, charm and grace;
The leaven of our family is a blessing to the race.
The clan goes marching on!

In England, Wales, and Scotland, and the Emerald Isle as well;
In U.S.A. and Canada, in city, plain and dell!
Where English tongue is spoken-that is where our kinsmen dwell.
The clan goes marching on!

Subject: Bastards in Colonial Virginia

Friends,
I got so many resonses on my original message that I am reposting
the entire list from the book "Colonial Caroline, A History of
Caroline County, Virginia" by T. E. Campbell, Dietz Press, Richmond
VA, 1954, page 427.  I will post some of the responses in a
separate post.  Thanks to everyone.
Sharon

"Bastards were commonplace in colonial Caroline, although
the punishment for a white woman, free or indentured, who
bore an illegitimate child was 5 lashes at the the whipping-post
or a 50 shilling or 500 lb. tobacco fine.  Few women had the
money or tobacco to pay the fine and most of them were
whipped.  A list of the white women who had bastards follows.
All were whipped unless specifically stated otherwise.
1733- ELizabeth Sanders, fine paid by Thomas Lantor, Charity
Burns, child a mulatto, Mary Close, child a mulatto,
      Jane Ross, child a mulatto.
1734- Margaret Pence, Mary Scott.
1735- Mary Bell
1736- Elizabeth Sanders, Christine Smith, Emmanuel Penn the
father but fine paid by James Vaughter.
1737- Eleanor Douglass, Margaret Pence, Mary Billops, Elizabeth
Sanders, child a mulatto but Thomas Lantor paid the fine,
      Margaret Crew.
1738- Elizabeth Rains.
1739- Mary Scott, child a mulatto.
1740- Lucy Fortune.
1741- Sussannah Brooks

Bill - I found an obit in the Sandersville, Wash. CO paper dated 17 Dec. 1896
on my grandmother, Martha Unknown b. 1807 SC m. William Pournelle.  "Mrs. M.
B. Pournelle long a resident of Sandersville, died in Augusta on Monday in the
90th year of her age.  She was the grandmother of our townsman Mr. Mark
Pournelle, and the sister of Mrs. Brooks, the mother of T. J. Brooks, also the
halfsister of Mr. W. B. Barwick.  Mr. Wm. Pournelle her husband was once
sheriff of this county."

I did a little census research and found on the 1860 Census: Thomas J. Brooks
20, overseerer C. R. Road, b. GA; Elizabeth 51 b. SC (b. 1809).   From Tad
Evans Books Newspaper Clippings of Wash. Co., GA, Vol. II, p. 75, in paper
Wed. Sep. 15, 1869.  Married: In Wash. Co. on 2d instant, by R. P. Bynum,
Thomas J. Brooks and Miss Elizabeth Jones, all of said county.  And on the
1890 Census Wash. Co. printed alpha copy:  Brooks, Elizabeth 81 b. GA.

Is this the same Brooks Family you are researching?  I am searching for
Martha's and her sister, Elizabeth's maiden name.  Thanks for any help or
suggestions you may be able to offer.  Is this Thomas the son of your James?

Dear Bill - Thanks for your help, you are right....I need to look for
guardianship papers in the Barwick name.  I didn't know whether you had done
some research which showed Elizabeth (Martha B. Pournelle's) sister's maiden
name.

I did do a little more census work on Elizabeth - the 1860 Census she was with
her son Thomas J. Brooks, he was 20 (b. 1830) and an overseer on Central RR,
born GA. Elizabeth, his mom is 51 b.(1809) SC.  On the 1860 there is also a Wm
J. Brooks 29 w/wife Sarah, children: Rufus W. G.,John R. W. and Ida....is Wm a
brother to Thomas J.? (Just wondered, it really doesn't matter)

On the 1850 Census there is Robert Brooks 52, farmer and wife: Elizabeth 40
(b. 1810)  this would be Elizabeth, he sister to my Martha B. Pournelle.
Children: William 2(I answered my own question, yes he is a brother!), Sarah
E. 14; Mary A. R. 12; Thomas J. 11, and Nancy 50 b. NC - this is probably
Robert's sister.  But the census shows Robert b. GA (unimportant to me)

I don't know whether to look in SC or GA for guardianship papers on a Barwick.
Robert and Elizabeth probably married ca. 1828/29, and if Elizabeth was born
1809/10....I'll need to look between 1810 and 1825, right?  Martha married
about the same time...have not found marriage record on her.

I did find a marriage reference Sed, Sept. 15, 1869 in Wash. Co. on 2nd
instant by R. P. Bynum, Thomas J. Brooks and Miss Elizabeth Jones, all of said
county.  So Thomas J.' s mother and wife were both Elizabeth.

Isn't genealogy fun!!  Always a quest..Thanks, Mary

Jan. 24 / 1999.
Hello to fellow researchers of the surname BROOKS.
My name is Dave Fournier and I am looking for any
information on the following Brooks family.

HAROLD BROOKS born March 12 / 1895 in Aylesbury
England , County of Buckingham.
Harold's parents were JAMES BROOKS & SUSANNAH
MATILDA FRANCES BATES , listed as living at
6 Bicester Road Aylesbury at the time of Harolds
birth .
James & Susannah were believed to have 20 - 21
children and James is listed as a house decorator .
Harold was quite possibly a HOME child sent to
Canada in the early 1900's .Four of his brothers
were killed in the WWI but we don't have records
of their names.
Harold had a sister named or nicknamed Queenie
who did art work for the audubon society.
It was believed that prior to Harolds birth
the family had something to do with manufacturing
or selling of glass.
Harold also had a brother that came to Canada
and his name was William.
I had found a Brookes family in the 1851 Dublin
Ireland census , Maurice listed as glass merchant
and warehouse, that might be related ???? not
certain but was this time of potato famine in
Ireland??

I am trying to help my cousin Fred Brooks find
out some information on his father's family
and could use alot of help to do this as information
obtained from Harold was quite limited.
Any help would be greatfully appreciated.
Thanks. Dave Fournier

I recently came across the Brooks website, and thought I might ask for your
assistance.  I have the Brooks line in both my mother's and father's sides,
and have came up against a dead-end on both.

The information I have is as follows:

Father's side - John Brooks, born 15 September 1840, in Middleton,
Lancaster, England, son of Thomas Brooks and Mary Murry.

Mother's side - Mary Jane Brooks, born about 1843, daughter of John Brooks,
born about 1817 in Georgia or Arkansas, and Martha _______.  Martha was one
quarter Choctaw Indian, and these two lived much of their lives in the
Indian Territory of Oklahoma.

On both of these Brooks families, I've been stymied.  Any help you might be
able to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Dear Bill:
I am Wanda J. Rock Brooks, and have been doing research on the Brooks line for
a short time.  My husband is Richard Allen Brooks, son of Richard Aubern
Brooks, who is son of Pleasant Hampton Brooks II.  I have quite a bit of
information collected from the family and other cousins if you would be
interested.  I am still researching and verifying our information.  I recently
subscribed to the Brooks mailing list from Ancestry.com but have not found any
relatives yet.

anything you can find about Brooks/Pettigrew.  Abigail Brooks Pettigrew's
husban Robert Hance Pettigrew was an overseer on a Ga. plantation and was
killed by two slaves.  Robert's gold watch was found on one of the slaves
about two days after the killing.

Thank you for replying and for looking.

Hi,

I had a Robert Rose Brooks who lived in Washinton co. at that time.  He was a
RW soldier who married for the third time to Nancy Gilmore.  They had three
sons and migrated to Marion co., Houston co., GA and then to Pike co. AL.

I have a lot of information on the ancestors of Robert Rose.  They originated
in VA.

If this sounds like a match I would be happy to share.

Anna Brooks married Henry Smith in Michigan, Minnesota or Wisconsin, or
Ontario, Canada.
While they lived in Ontario they had for sure two daughters and possibly one
or more sons.
1) Florence Ester Smith, born 1885 in Ryde Township, Ontario, in 1903 she
married Robert James McNabb in Orillia, Ontario.
2)Effie Smith, born about 1898 in Ontario married a ?Plewes.
There could have been a boy born after Effie, this is also what I am unsure
of.
After these two girls were married and had a couple of children, them and
their husbands and children moved to the Saskatoon and Swift Current areas
in Saskatchewan.
Apparently after their children were raised Henry and Anna returned to
Michigan, Minnesota, or Wisconsin.
Any assistance I can get will be greatly appreciated...
Thankyou
Sharon McNabb

Hi Bill,

I saw your Query of Brooks, Goff, Bruney & Grace In the Leon Co., Fl Query Forum. I'm George William Cason
I live in Madison Co., Fl. I'm interested because my Great Grandfather Abram Marshall Trotman of Washington
Co., Ga. was adopted by John Cason and his first wife Eleanor (Burney) Cason. (Note: I first thought Eleanor
maiden name was Hart, because in the Cemeteries of Leon Co., Fl. the Cason Bunker Cemetery gave that
Eleanor was a Hart, also the History of Indian Springs Baptist Church listed her as Hart. But a excellent
Genealogist Boe Williams of Valdosta, Ga. told me that she was Eleanor Burney not Eleanor Hart.) With your
information Eleanor Burney is correct.
On your gedcom: pg 207 You don't have where Arthur & Sarah Bruney are buried. They were buried in the Old
Indian Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. In July 1997 the Old Cemetery Graves Ten Marked Graves and Six
Unmarked were moved three miles to where Indian Springs Baptist Church is located now. by the way they
removed the remains and put in small coffins. ( If you would like I'll try to make some copies of what was in the
newspaper about the relocation of the Graves?)
Also another interest in the Brooks Family is my neighbor Paul M. Brooks Jr. is researching his family he is a
descendant of John M. Brooks a brother of your James Russell Brooks. He found John M. Brooks son John
Francis Brooks buried in the Union Methodist Church Cemetery in Jefferson County, Fl. but hasn't found John M.
or his father James graves.
Was Anna the wife of James Brooks a Burney before she married?

Sincerely,
George W. Cason

Hello fellow BROOKS searchers.  Here are my notes on Lewis D. BROOKS for
those who are interested:

Records of James Irving BROOKS, Sr., Great-Grandson of Lewis D. BROOKS:
According to family tradition and statements of several of his children,
Beverly BROOKS' father was Lewis D. BROOKS.  (Dabney BROOKS, also spelled
Louis).  He was a veteran of the War of 1812, and is said to have received a
pension for this service.  His father was Louis BROOKS.  (JIB uses the
marriage record of Lewis to Sarah (Sally) ROSE which shows Lewis D. BROOKS
marrying Sally ROSE on 5 Nov 1827.  Lewis was a widower and Sally was a
spinster.  The bondsmen were Lewis BROOKS and George ROSE. The relationship
of Louis BROOKS to Lewis D. BROOKS can be established in the 1850 U.S.
Census which shows Lewis, age 80, living in the household of Lewis D.
BROOKS, age 53.)

Essex County, VA, Marriage Register shows that Lewis D. BROOKE(s) married
Maria Alexander, 4 Jan 1815, Page 231.  Lewis D. BROOKS married Fannie
Griggs, 12 Dec 1821, Page 238. Lewis D. BROOKS married Sally ROSE, 5 Nov
1827, Page 243.

"Lewis D. BROOKS owned land adjoining the property of the late Joseph Lewis,
now (1960's) Bob Smith's, reaching from the vicinity of Trinity Methodist
Church, now on Route 360 to the road from Millers Tavern to Howertons (State
Route 684).  One entered by a farm road and came out on the
Howertons-Millers Tavern Road.  From this place came the early homes of
Beverly BROOKS, Peggie BROOKS (Mrs. John GOODE) and Richard Hunter BROOKS.
Richard Hunter BROOKS lived on the place with his father, Lewis D. BROOKS
and took care of him in his later years.  He heired the home, most of the
land, and a major portion of the estate.  Near Trinity Church there was a
parcel of land known in the family as the ROSE Place.  In 1794, George ROSE
bought 35-1/2 acres from Thomas BOHANON.  In 1827, Lewis D. BROOKS married
Sarah (Sally) ROSE and in 1830 bought this property from the estate of his
father-in-law, George ROSE.  Some of the land eventually ended up in the
ownership of Emma Lee BROOKS (Mrs. Joel Brooke WINDER).  The home of Lewis
D. BROOKS and the adjacent land was left to Richard H. BROOKS' third wife
and widow.  At the widow's death, the land was sold and the house was taken
down and rebuilt about as it was originally in the Richmond suburban area.
(According to Manrid Winder, the son of Emma BROOKS WINDER, the house was
rebuilt in Manquin, on Rt. 360 in King William County, VA.  The house was
later razed when Rt. 360 was widened in the early 1960's.)  A descendent of
George Rose, Mrs. Margaret ROSE SIEG, 705 Bancroft Avenue, Richmond, VA, has
documentary evidence that Lewis D. BROOKS' name was Lewis (Louis) DABNEY
BROOKS, sometimes spelled BROOKE, BROOK, or BROOCKS.  There was a Dabney
BROOKS (probably two), who married 1812, Caty WEBB; in 1838, Louisa
JEFFRIES; in 1850, Sarah BROACH.  Emma BROOKS WINDER is (was) positive that
this Dabney BROOKS was no kin to Lewis D. BROOKS or Beverly BROOKS.  Other
sources indicate that she is correct.  (The "DABNEY" theory has been found
to be incorrect as Essex County Guardian Book 3 shows that Lewis' middle
name was "DURHAM", (WIB))

"The old BROOKS Cemetery is in the hands of Emma BROOKS WINDER.  Here are
buried Beverly BROOKS and his wife, Lucy Ann ATKINS, and several generations
of the family and its connections.

* Originally this family spelled the name BROOKE, BROOK, BROOCKE, BROOCKS
and later BROOKS.  The "S" is said to indicate "son, son of BROOK".
Signed:  J. Irving BROOKS

"Widow Sarah BROOKS."  The account settlement states that Richard BROOKS
became indebted to the estate of Lewis D. BROOKS on 25 Apr 1876.  This is
probably the date of Lewis' death.

U.S. CENSUS, 1880, Essex County:
No record of Lewis D. BROOKS

MILITARY: "Index to War of 1812 Pension Files, Vol 1", transcribed by Virgil
D. White, Page 249:  BROOKS, Lewis D., Sarah ROY (ROSE), 3rd wife, widows
certificate CWC-23466. Survivors Certificate SC-11272, 8 Nov 1827, Essex
County, VA.  Soldier died 3 Jul 1876, widow died 3 Jul 1885.  Served under
William Warrings, VA Militia.  Lived in Essex County, VA.  1st wife Maria
(ALEXANDER), 2nd wife Fanny Greggs.

Source of Information: Genealogical Records of James Irving BROOKS, Sr.;
Court House Records, Essex County.

Lewis D. BROOKS was born c. 1794 according to the age of 76 years that he
gave in the 1870 census.  Lewis was married at least three times.  The first
was to Maria ALEXANDER, the mother of Beverly BROOKS, grandfather of James
Irving BROOKS, Sr.  In this marriage register Lewis is recorded as "Lewis D.
BROOKE".  William BROOKE was his bondsman and probably kinsman.  Lewis and
Maria were married on 4 Jan 1815.  Both of them were single at the time
(i.e. not widowed).  Lewis' second marriage was to Fanny GRIGGS (the Griggs
name is found in Essex County records very often and is usually spelled
GREGGS).  Lewis and Fanny were married 12 Dec 1821.  William GRIGGS was one
of the bondsmen for the marriage.  This is probably Fanny's father.  His
third wife was Sarah (Sally) ROSE who he married on 5 Nov 1827.

Lewis D. BROOKS, also spelled "Louis BROOKE, BROOCKE and BROOCKS", owned
land that reached from the vicinity of Trinity United Methodist Church, now
on U.S. Route 360, to the Millers Tavern - Howerton Road, approximately
1-1/2 miles southeast of Millers Tavern, VA.  The property was entered by a
farm road that came out on the Millers Tavern - Howerton Road.  From this
large holding came the early homes of Beverly BROOKS, the grandfather of
James Irving BROOKS, Sr., Peggie BROOKS who married John GOODE, and Richard
Hunter BROOKS.  Richard Hunter BROOKS lived on the place with his father,
Lewis D., and took care of him in his later years.
Richard H. BROOKS was the executor of Lewis' estate and inherited the home
and most of the land according to the records of James Irving BROOKS and
Essex County records.  An account of the sale of Lewis' estate can be found
in Essex County Will Book 29, pages 631, 641, 648, & 693.  Lewis apparently
died intestate sometime around 25 Apr 1876 as Richard BROOKS is listed as
having become "indebted to the estate of his decedent" on that date.

Names listed as having bought the "perishable estate of Lewis D. BROOKS..."
are:
Richard BROOKS, R. PRINCE, Mrs. Sally BROOKS, Jno L. Boughton, Lewis E.
BROOKS, Phillip WILLIAMS, Thomas CAMPBELL, George T. BROOKS. William
JACKSON, Ezra C. ATKINS, Rebecca WILLIAMS, Joseph CLARK, Beverly BROOKS,
Mrs. Lucinda DIX, and MRS. Lucinda BROOKS.

Richard had to sell off the household goods of Lewis' estate to pay bills
for Lewis' coffin, medical bills to Dr. Wm I. HAILE, and other debts such as
taxes and court fees.  On page 692 of Will Book 29, the sale of a bed to
"Widow, Mrs. Sarah BROOKS" is discussed.  Sally and Sarah are interchanged
in the County records on several occasions.

Near Trinity United Methodist Church there was a parcel of land known in the
family as the "ROSE PLACE".  In 1794, George Rose, Sally's father, bought
35-1/2 acres from Thomas BOHANNON.  In 1827, Lewis D. BROOKS married Sarah
(Sally) ROSE and in 1830, bought this property from the estate of his
father-in-law, George ROSE.

Richard Hunter BROOKS, Beverly BROOKS' half-brother, first married in 1853,
Martha Ann Doves.  Louis BROOKS who lived at Millers Tavern in the early
1900's is thought to have been the son of Richard H. BROOKS and Martha Ann
DOVES.   Louis had three daughters (no sons).  One married James TRIBLE and
had children.  The other two died unmarried.

In 1893, Richard H. BROOKS married the granddaughter of Beverly BROOKS,
Virginia DIX.  They had one daughter, Emma BROOKS, who married Loel Brooke
WINDER.  They lived in the Millers Tavern area and raised a large family.
Emma inherited most of Richard H. BROOKS' estate, on which she later built
her home.  The old home of Lewis D. BROOKS and a parcel of land, was left by
Richard to his third wife and widow, Emma's step-mother.  At the widow's
death, the house and land were sold and the house was taken down and
rebuilt, about as it was originally, in the Richmond suburban area.

A descendent of George ROSE , Margaret ROSE (SIEG), who lived at 705
Bancroft Avenue, Richmond, VA, had documentary evidence that Lewis D.
BROOKS' name was Lewis (Louis) Dabney BROOKS, sometimes spelled BROOKE,
BROOK, or BROOCKS.  There was a Dabney BROOKS (probably two), who married
Caty WEBB in 1812; Louisa JEFFRIES in 1838; and Sarah BROACH in 1850.  Emma
BROOKS WINDER was positive that this "Dabney BROOKS" was no kin to Lewis D.
BROOKS or Beverly BROOKS.  Essex County records indicate that Lewis D. and
Dabney BROOKS were well acquainted and may even have been brothers.  In
several records, the two names appear together, and their marriages and ages
were very close.

The old BROOKS Cemetery contains the remains of Beverly BROOKS and his wife
Lucy Ann ATKINS (BROOKS) as well as many other BROOKS' (probably Lewis D.
BROOKS).  It was in the hands of Emma BROOKS WINDER until she passed away in
1972.  She is buried at Trinity United Methodist Church in Millers Tavern,
VA.  Her son, Mandrid WINDER, lives not far from the homestead and says that
he has knowledge of the cemetery.

William Irving BROOKS, son of James Irving BROOKS, Jr.

1)  Susan A. "Sudie" BROOKS (1872 - 1934) daughter of Thomas J. BROOKS and
Susan GRIMMETT m Charles W. SMITH (1862-1931) son of Wiley Brooks SMITH and
Eliza Scott HALL. The lived and are buried in LaGrange, Troup Co., GA.  They
had 7 children...

        Willis SMITH
        Frank SMITH
        Leon SMITH
        Lucy SMITH
Susie Brooks SMITH ca 1900 ( my grandmother)
        Nelle SMITH

2)  Leila BROOKS (dates and parents unknown) married Young Hall SMITH, M.D.
son of Wiley Brooks SMITH I and Eliza Scott HALL.  They lived in LaGrange,
Troup Co., GA at one time, but do not know if they remained there or moved on.

I am trying to trace my husband's family with limited results.  Can anyone
help me?

(1)  Leroy BROOKS was born 1891 in Hector, NY, parents: William BROOKS (age
22, b.NYC) and Ellen A. BELL (age 20, b. Seneca Co., NY).  His parents are
not listed.  Hers are listed as John BELL and _____CLARK.

(2)  I have found a record of a John BELL (born in England) and Priscilla
CLARK BELL, who were parents of 11 children,  and the names of nine of them
being Sarah b.1861, Harriet b. 1863, Joseph b. 1865, Catherine 1867, George
W.b1868, Mary b. 1869, John H. b. 1870, William H. b. 1878, Howard b. 1880.

(3)  A Schuyler Co. directory of 1893-4 shows a John Bell in East Steamburg
(a "suburb" of Searsburg?), born in England in 1839, general farming 50 acres.

(4)  A Mrs. John BELL died in 1883 in Searsburg leaving a husband and 11
children.  She is listed in "Some Cemeteries of the Between the Lakes
County Grove Cemetery Trumansburg page 578"  (I don't know where that might
be)

(5)  There is John S. CLARK listed in the above directory of North Hector,
retired farmer b. 1812 in Seneca Co.)

(6) There is a record of a marriage of Leroy BROOKS 22, and Freida STAUFFER
17, dau. H.S. and Myra Osgood STAUFFER in Lodi 1/14/1914.

When Leroy Brooks applied for a marriage license in Allegheny Co. Pa. in
1924 he stated that his first marriage had been terminated by death Oct.
28, 1920.  I don't know where this death might be recorded.  I did not find
a copy of it in Hector Town Office. He listed his mother's name as Ellen,
and Mary Ellen, but her marriage record listed it as Ellen A.  I also found
a birth record in Hector for Elizabeth Myra BROOKS, parents Leroy & Fredia,
Nov. 11, 1915.

The information that I have was gleaned from a trip to the Hector Town
Office last summer, and correspondence from the Schuyler Co. Historical
Society, Diane Nelson, Betty Auten and Barbara Bell.

Any advice or help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Everyone!

I am still trying to find out about my "Brooks" line.  The stray name that I
have is Reding L. Brooks.  I know that he married Mary Elizabeth Whitley
(1843-1909).  She was the daughter of William Whitley and Emily Collard.

I believe that Reding L. Brooks is related to my GG-Grandmother, Nancy
Cannon Brooks Caperton Moore.  She was the daughter of Samuel Clifford
Brooks and Elizabeth Hailey.  Nancy was first married to Mr. Caperton in
Tennessee.  Her family, including her father, moved to Texas around 1850.
Mr. Caperton was killed and she then married my GG-Grandfather, James W.
Moore.

Nancy's middle name was "Cannon"...perhaps this is a family name?

My Great-Grandfather George H. Moore, son to Nancy and James W., was
orphaned at a very early age.  He often spoke of spending time with "Uncle
Red Brooks" in the Big Thicket of East Texas.  Therefore, I am wondering if,
in fact, Reding is Nancy's brother.

Nancy was born 12-06-1822, TN  d.  02-18-1867  she is buried with my
GG-Grandfather, James W. Moore in East Sandy Cemetery, Walker Co., Tx.

Any help out there on this "Brooks" family?

Thanks,
Patty Smoot

Subject: Michael BROOKS / BRUCH / BRUG, Northampton Co., PA, late 1700's
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII
Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT

Seeking information on the family of Michael BROOKS (also
spelled BRUG, BROUGH and BRUCH on various assessment
rolls) who lived in Upper Mt. Bethel Twp., Northampton Co, PA at
the time of the 1790 census.   This is an attempt to link him with
Barbara BROOKS, b. PA, c 1783 and Mary BROOKS b. PA, c.
1778.

At this time, we have the following members of Michael BROOKS'
family:
Michael BROOKS / BRUCH / BRUG
Maria Elizabeth (wife)
Anna Maria BRUG (b. c. 1768)
Johann Georg BRUCH (b. c. 1773)
Peter (b. c. 1780) (may have been chr. 25 Mar 1780, Jordan
Reform Church, Lehigh Co.)
George Wendal BRUG (b. c. 1784)
Michael BRUCH (b. 5 Sep 1787, chr. 24 Feb 1788, Hecktown)
Jacob BRUCH (b. 12 May 1791, chr. 13 May 1792, Hecktown)

In 1790, Michael BROOKS had in his household 3 males over 16, 4
males under 16, and 6 females, so there are most likely children
missing from this list. By 1800, the head count for the family was
down to 2 males (10-16), 1 male (45+) and no females.

In 1803, the Berczy census of Markham Township, York Co.,
Ontario, showed a Peter BROOCK, age 23 (or b. abt 1780)
identified as 'wife's brother', living in the household of John MARR
and his wife Barbara BROOKS MARR in Markham. John MARR
and his brothers had moved to Markham in 1800 from Upper Mount
Bethel Twp. It appears that his wife Barbara remained behind in
Pennsylvania until after the birth of their first child, John, in Nov.
1800.  She then came to Canada in the company of her brother
Peter and her sister Mary who married John MARR's brother,
Joseph.  Her brother Jacob may have come at that time (he would
have only been 8 or 9) or later, but he was in York Co. by 1815
when he married Elizabeth JONES of Whitby Township.  Years
later a newspaper article on Elizabeth mentioned that her husband
was from Northampton Co., PA.

What my cousins and I would like to find is information either linking
Barbara and Mary to the family or anything that would definitely
disprove the relationship.  We have the circumstantial evidence
cited above, plus Jacob BROOKS named two of his daughters
Barbara and Mary Jane which at least suggests that there might
have been a Barbara and a Mary among his close relatives.  Any
help or clues would be greatly appreciated.

died before 1870, probably in McNairy County, Tennessee.  He married Sarah
Hastings.  They had three children:

Joseph Brooks, Jr.

The three children were orphaned while young.  I am looking for any info on

To all list  readers, looks like my  "introduction" message has gotten
off on the wrong foot  and I apologize.

The biography I am looking for  is about Angeline Brooks  Sears, as I
had in the subject line.  NOT  Lydia Ransom Brooks  ,who was her mother.

The biography was written by a good friend   Mrs. Bishop Hamline in 1851
and publ. by Swormstedt &
Power, Cincinnati, OHIO .  It had good sales according to her son.

Any other information about this woman greatly desired.  She was born
in  Cincinnati in 1817 and died there1848.  Just 31years old.   Wife of

Here it is a New Year and I am still hunting my GBGgrandfather Brooks.
Phillips E. BROOKS was b in 1800 in VA and married Margaret.  They moved
to Manchester Twp, Morgan Cty, OH and had three children that I know
of:  John R. b. 1837, Sarah E. 1840 (my GGgrandmother) who married
William W. BARNHOUSE and went to NE, and Phillip who married a Mary
Ellen possibly DYE.  I believe, Phillip had brothers named James b.
about 1803, William and Ezra.  Sarah E. named children Joseph, Alva
Day/Dye,  Mary Elizabeth, Caroline Alma, Lily, and Cora.  I believe none
of those names except Mary Elizabeth came from the Barnhouse side.  I
would really appreciate any information on this family.  Audrey Annable

Looking for anyone who knows any of the descendants of Mary J. or Nicey
(Nancy) Brooks, who were the daughters of Terrell and Elizabeth Brooks,
originally from Georgia.  Nancy was born in 1832 in Houston County, Georgia
and Mary was born in 1839 in Stewart County, Georgia.  They had two brothers:
James and Joab.  Joab was born in 1844 in Stewart County, Georgia.  I am
descended from James.  In 1850, the family was living in Muscogee County,
Georgia near the border with Alabama.  I have been unable to locate them in a
census from 1860.  I know just after 1860, the family moved to Covington
County, Alabama and settled near the Brooklyn Community.  I don't know if
Nancy and Mary were with them or if they got married before hand.  Just a
hunch that they might've went with their parents to Alabama.  Joab was
apparently killed in the Civil War and James was badly injured in it.  So, I
assume there are no descendants of Joab.  James, Terrell, and Elizabeth later
went to Texas by 1870.  I don't know what became of Mary and Nancy.  However,
I've wondered if perhaps there are descendants of Mary and Nancy somewhere.
If anyone has any information, I would appreciate it.  Thanks.
