THE BROOKS FAMILY QUERY EXCHANGE
The purpose of the Brooks Family Query Exchange is to assist researchers of the various Brooks families and preserve as an historical record Brooks information that is likely to be lost or available to a limited few. A library of books and exchange publications is maintained for the members use. A sur-name file of surnames (other than Brooks) being researched by our members, is kept. The BFQE invites contributions of Brook(s) and Brooke(s) related material for publication. All material should be printed or typed. The author's or contributor's name and address should be on at least the first page. All members may send as many queries as they wish and there is no limit on the number of words per query. Your editor reserves the right to edit queries, with no loss of content and information. The deadline for submissions is the 15th of the month prior to the month of issue. The BFQE in printed quarterly in January, April, July and October.
The Brooks Family Historical Society and Library can not in any way guarantee the accuracy of any information appearing in this magazine, however, every possible effort is made to strive for accuracy and authenticity. We can not be responsible for the publishing rights of material furnished by our contributors. The Brooks Family Historical Society and Library is a non-profit organization. Dues are $9.00 per volume. Members may purchase gift subscriptions for individuals, libraries or societies, however, these individuals, libraries and societies have no membership rights. A gift subscription is $8.00 per volume. The BFQE is available only by volume which includes four issues totalling 100-150 pages with a name/place index in the fourth issue.
Reprints of all back issues of the Brooks Family Query Exchange and
its predecessor the Brooks Family Bulletin (Vol. I and II) are available.
They are sold by Volume only, at a price of $8.00 per volume postpaid,
for one volume ordered separately. The second and each additional volume
on the same order is $6.00. Each volume of BFQE contains 100-150 pages
of Brooks related data. The Brooks Family Bulletin contains approximately
100 pages per volume.

EDITOR'S COMMENT
I constantly review the BFQE mailing list to insure it agrees with the paid membership. During the past year only two members have been removed due to undelivered issues (not an address change). However, I receive about 20 letters per year about single issues not being received. Since the same mailing list is used for an entire volume, I conclude that this is the efficiency of the Post Office Department and probably will not improve. Therefore, as you mail in your renewal checks please indicate if you have missed individual copies. I will send replacement copies with the next mailing.

EDITOR'S NOTE:
After investigating for several months, I have finally found a printer
and book binder who will do the BFQE work for a reasonable price. Consequently,
the next issue of the BFQE should be more professional looking. In addition,
about the end of the year a book on BROOKS VITAL STATISTICS of Massachusetts,
by Rose Ann Thomas will be available to our readers at cost. Other books
will be published as time permits and all will be priced to recover the
cost only. I believe you will be pleased with the price. More information
will be available in the next issue of the BFQE.

He died in 1815, comparatively young.
His children were Robert, Elizabeth, James, Richard. He and after him
his son Robert, had charge of the estate of Thomas WEST.
In 1808 Robert married Elizabeth, daughter of James HAYS, the founder
of New York, and at first resided in Nelson County. In 1812 he became a
resident of New York, purchasing lot Thirty-One, on which stood at the
time a one-story framed house. In 1817 he made from David HAYS the first
purchase of what was subsequently the Brooksville plantation in the same
vicinity.
BROOKS' IN VIRGINIA (Continued)
The next year his brothers and sisters appointed him their attorney
to sell nine thousand acres of land in Harrison County, Kentucky. For a
long period he kept a tavern at Brooksville, held in high esteem among
travellers for its capital good cheer. He was a magistrate of the county,
and a ruling elder in the Mountain Plains Church. He and John PILSON were
the only justices who appeared to enforce the law against profane swearing,
both paying over to the Poor Fund fines which they had imposed for that
offense.
His children were: Elizabeth, Mary Frances, William, Robert, Ira, Henry,
Maria Antoinette BROOKS.
But though processing a fine farm, and conducting a popular hostelry, his affairs became greatly embarrassed. In 1836 he was compelled by his debts to sell his place to James P. TYLER, and removed to Kentucky.

Found records of Capt. Wm. CARR and his 2nd wife Susannah BROOKS in "The Carr Family Records" by Edson T. CARR.
It would seem probable that the father of Susannah was Charles since
she had two brothers of that name. Very probably one died young but the
other married in 1775, Eunice WHITE.

From: Miss Carrie Crenshaw TIMBERLAKE, Ellerson, Virginia, Jan. 12, 1935.
"Your inquiry in the Va. Historical Magazine of Jan. 1935, p. 68 relative
to the parentage of Susan BROOKS.... the fact that a deed of William CARR
made in 1751 to his daughter Susanna & her husband William CRENSHAW
- my ancestors - & witnessed by Mary CARR (who afterward married Nicholas
CRENSHAW) John CHILES & Susannah BROOKES doubtless gives a clue to
her mother's first name. No doubt she was old & thus signed by her
mark. In our references the name is written always Susanna or Susannah
& the last name is either BROOKS, BROOKES or BROOKE.
I have an abstract of William CARR's will in which he names all of his
children but I do not know whether he named them as to age. The last item
is where he leaves only a cow & calf to his three daughters Susannah,
Sarah & Mary, as he had already settled land on each one - no doubt
when she married. As the CHILES name was given my grandmother Marietta
Chiles CRENSHAW and there was a first wife of William CARR said to have
been a Miss CHILES. I am desirous to find out which were CHILES children
and which were BROOKS. Susanna CARR was named guardian of the minor children
& William CRENSHAW's wife's name is frequently written Susanna Brooks
CRENSHAW, as though she were the 2nd wife's child. Could you give me any
information about this.
I have a good deal of CARR information I should be glad to pass on to
you if you are interested, including CARR's will.
There has recently been published a wonderful book called "VA Historical
Index" by Dr. SWEM of the College of William & Mary. The First volume
contains about half of the Alphabet & the references are to the "William
and Mary Quarter1y," "Virginia Magazine of History and Biography," but
I have not yet consulted it for BROOKS, as I have had my hands more than
full with CRENSHAW & some incursions into the CARR Family.
In 1926 I visited your lovely island on a "Round the World Cruise" and have been eager to see it once again".

____________________________________________________________________________
From: Mrs. Clement Harvey MILLER (Allice UAVIS), Box 92 A, RFD 2, St. Helena, Napa Co., CA.
March 1, 1935. Capt. Wm. CARR m.(2), at 1755, Susan BROOKS, who became
the mother of Thomas CARR (went to Georgia and served under MARION in Rev.
War), born (date as given in D.A.R. records) 1756. He is mentioned as her
'beloved son' in a deed in 1783. Charles Brooks CARR, apparently dead in
1784; Agnes Brooks CARR, m. William ELLIS, Jr. & died in Kentucky.
Susan Brooks CARR was appointed guardian of the minor children after
the death of Capt. Wm. CARR, these being Phebe, Walter Chiles, Thomas,
Charles Brooks CARR and Agnes Brooks CARR. From this record of Spotsylvania
Co. comes the idea that Susan BROOKS was the mother of all the children,
which is a grievous mistake. I have proof to the contrary. I cannot lay
my hands on it just now, as after we moved from Oakland to this lovely
ranch in Napa, Co. I have been too busy to get all my notes and references
properly placed. But there is extant a record showing that Walter CHILES,
son of Henry CHILES of New Kent Co., b. 1699; d. 1761 or '71, I do not
recall exactly - having no children of his own left legacies to "his beloved
sister's children, wife of Wm. CARR." Now Walter CHILES (b. 1699) and his
sister Susannah (with other children) were children of Henry CHILES of
New Kent Co., VA, and his wife (according to CRIDLIN, which I think is
correct), Margaret LITTLEPAGE. The elder Henry CHILES being a son of Walter
CHILES (d. 1671) and his 2nd wife Susannah - who married 2d, Rev. James
WADDING of Petsworth Parish. This is where the name 'Susannah' comes into
the family which is handed down to this day.
I have not the date of birth of any Phebe CARR, but I know she was older
than her brother Walter. You will see that in the deed to which you refer
Susannah BROOKS signs herself as 'Susannah (X) BROOKS', not Carr. This
was in 1751, when Susannah CARR was already married to Wm. CRENSHAW. I
have a 'hunch' that Susan BROOKS was a member of the CARR household at
that time, and after the death of Capt. Wm. CARR's wife, married him.
Susan (Brooks) CAHR married again, probably about 1762 (date guesswork)
Ludovick 0'NEIL, had a daughter Catherine, who married John RODGERS and
went to KY. (Will of Susannah O'NEIL, 1792, Fayette Co., KY., burnt Record
Book 3, p. 134.) Susan BROOKS was dead in 1784.
I know nothing about her. I found the names of Charles BROOKS and of
Thomas BROOKS in Jillson's Kentucky land grants, and from the names inferred
that she was in some way akin.
I have often wondered if the name BROOKS was meant for BROOKE, the 's'
and 'e' being confused, one for the other. I have not followed out the
BROOKE family of Maryland, where the original ancestor settled at first.
BROOKS' IN VIRGINIA (Continued)
I know nothing of the O'NEILS. Some members of the ELLIS family married
O'NEILS in Spotsylvania Co., VA, but I do not believe they were very early
settlers in VA at that time.
I have found that Susannah, Susanna and Susan were interchangeable.
Just why the name BROOKS should have been used so much and so inadvertently
among other descendants of the CARRS except our family, I cannot surmise,
I find among many of the later generations a naive ignorance of very essential
dates. lnvariably this causes confusion.
I am interested in Susannah CHILES, as she was the mother of my Phebe CARR.

BROOKS FAMILY RECORDS
Submitted by: Ethel Guernsey
5578 Bruce Ave.
PREFACE Portage, IN 46368
We are submitting for your approval and criticism, a record of the descendants
of James BROOKE, who settled in Fairfield County, Ohio, near Lancaster
about 1795; at his grave located near Hooker Station, Ohio, we have erected
a new and modern monument.
We have delayed the publishing of this record in order to get it more
complete and as near correct, as possible, but no doubt many errors have
crept in; many books of the first issue were returned marked "moved," "no
address," "not known," etc. Many letters have been written and some of
them never answered, but we feel the time was well spent and much information
gained.
BROOKS FAMILY RECORDS (Continued)
Much credit is due Mr. Banner M. BROOKE, of Columbus, Ohio, for most
of the record.
Mrs. Daisy MERKLE of Columbus, Ohio, is making an effort to trace the
ancestors of James BROOKE and sometime in the future we will have more
valuable information about out ancestors.
REUNION
Arrangements have been made to hold a BROOKE family reunion at Plymouth, Indiana, Sunday, July 25th, 1926, at the City Park, a fine and convenient place for all. Many of the BROOKES are strangers to each other; here is a good place to get acquainted. Pack your picnic basket and let's go. This Means You. Hope to meet you there.
Yours truly,
C. C. LEITNAKER Basil, Ohio, June 10th, 1926.

Volume VIII, No. 1 will be mailed in December with the actual printing
date. After the lost time nearly a year ago, I eventually decided it was
impractical to try to make up the lost time, due to queries and other material
being sent in for publication. I hope this will avoid future confusion
on the dates of printing and mailing.
