They are sold by Volume only, at a price of $8.00 per volume postpaid,
for one volume ordered separately. The second and each additional volume
on the same order is $6.00. Each volume of BFQE contains 100-150 pages
of Brooks related data. The Brooks Family Bulletin contains approximately
100 pages per volume.
EDITOR'S NOTE: I recently spent about eight hours in the courthouse
at Benton, Scott Co., MO and in the library at Sikeston, MO trying to find
some information on an uncle, Samuel Hickman BROOKS. Unfortunately, I found
nothing on my uncle but collected a significant amount of data on other
BROOKS individuals from Southeast Missouri . including some connections
to St. Clair Co., IL. I would be happy to send the data to anyone interested,
in exchange for organizing it in a manner suitable for publication. The
data are birth, marriages, deaths, deeds and Wills.

VACATION SUGGESTION
It is not too often we are able to read about history and experience
a bit of it also but if you are travelling in England you may do just that
at The King's Lodge . It is now a Bed and Breakfast establishment, known
as the Brooke Manor , built by Thomas and Susan Brooke in the early 1600's.
Robert, Thomas's son, and his wife also lived there and all four are buried
in the nearby Whitchurch. These are the ancestors of the Brooke/Brooks
family which settled in Maryland and produced two govenors. The name King's
Lodge came from the fact that King Charles I spent some time there in 1642,
just before the Battle of Newbury and his execution. The Manor is now owned
and operated by Benn and Hermoine Goulding who invite the Brooks FamiIy
members to stop by for Bed and Breakfast or just to visit. Hermoine cooks
in traditional English Country House style and grows her own organic vegetables.
Brooke Manor is accessible from highways M3 and M4 , off A34 , halfway between Newbury and Winchester in Whitchurch. It is open year round and rates are about 20 English pounds per person. Address: King's Lodge, Whitchurch, Hampshire, England RG28 7AS. Telephone: 0256-893644.

NORTH CAROLINA COUNTY FORMATION AND BOUNDARIES
I hope this information from the NC State Archives will answer some
of the questions about where some of our ancestors lived at various times.
Note that starting about 1776, a major part of what is now Tennessee, became
a part of North Carolina and during the following 12 years, seven counties
were formed as described below.
Washington County, NC was formed in 1777 from the Washington District
of NC. Washington District was formed on 22 August 1776 at the request
of inhabitants living on the Watauga, Holston and Nolachucky Rivers. The
first court was held at the home of Charles Robertson in 1777.
SulIivan County NC was formed in 1779 from Washington Co., NC. First
court was held at the home of Moses Lancey in 1779. Blountsville is the
present county seat.
Gr eene County, NC was formed in 1783 from Washington Co. , NC. The
first court was held in August 1783. Present county seat is Greenville,
TN.
Davidson County, NC was formed in 1783 from Washington Co., NC. The
first court was held in Nashville, now Tennessee, in 1784. Nashville, TN
is the present county seat.
Sumner County, NC was formed in 1787 from Davidson Co., NC. The first
court was held at the home of John Hamilton, probably in 1787. The present
county seat is Gallatin, TN.
Hawkins County, NC was formed in 1787 from SulIivan Co., NC. First court
was held in Rogersville in 1789, the present county seat, now Tennessee.
Tennessee County, NC was formed in 1758 from Davidson Co. , NC. The
first court was held at the home of Joseph Fitzworth in 1758. The county
was divided in 1796 into Montgomery and Robertson Counties, TN with Clarksville
and Springfield the respective county seats.

BROOKS' IN NORTH CAROLINA
Extracted from: Person County Heritage - North Carolina
Jeremiah BROOKS was born in Yirginia, 1773, parents unknown. Died Person County, 1871. Married in Caswell County to Elizabeth THOMAS, b. Pennsylvania, died in Person Co. 1855. Both buried at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Marriage bond, 18 March 1795, gives name BROOKES- all later records are BROOKS. Marriage bond signed by Thomas THOMAS, evidently Elizabeth's brother. Census of 1800 shows Jeremiah and Elizabeth with three children, and their family is listed through the 1870 census in Person. From the 1850 census Thomas THOMAS was living with Jeremiah. In 1805 a deed from Lord Granville shows purchase of their farm near Leasburg, and they bought more land through the years. Their Children:
BROOKS IN NORTH CAROLINA (continued)
I. David, b. 1796, m. Elizabeth TERRELL 1816. Lived in Caswell and Person counties until 1852, then moved to Tennessee with their family-Lucy , Andrew , Jonathan, Elanson Moore, John, Nancy M . , Elizabeth Jane , Emily F., Jeremiah, and Bob. At Big Sandy, Benton County, near the Tennessee River, they settled near their oldest son, Hiram Comer, who had gone in a wagon train from Bushy Fork, near Hurdle Mills, Person County, in 1843 with his wife Sara Elizabeth BLAYLOCK, and their infant son, Hiram and Sara's children: 1. Albert, 2. Haywood Lafayette, 3. Robert, 4. Nilliam David, 5. Emmeline, 6. Alfred Rainey, 7. Martha Frances, 8. Hiram Green, 9. Sarah Elizabeth, 10. Samuel Bedford, 11. Alabama Tennessee (daughter) .
David and Elizabeth, Hiram Comer and Sara Elizabeth and their families were members of Ramble Creek Baptist Church, where they and many descendants are buried. (All David's other children married in Tennessee.) Hiram Comer's substantial log homestead still stands not far from the church, and many descendants remain in West Tennessee, though others have scattered to Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, California, and Florida. Jeremiah himself came to Big Sandy, but neither that date nor the date of his return to Person County is known.
II. Andrew (son of Jeremiah) m. Sarah MALONE. Children: Nancy A., Elijah, Albert G., Elizabeth S., Harriet J., Sarah F., and John B. Only one descendant known: Mrs. Charles Weaver, Winston-Salem.
III. Green, m. ____ . Daughter Sarah Elizabeth, b. 1837 or 1839, lived with Jeremiah, 1850-70, married _____ MURRAY. No children.
IV. Logan, b. 1814, m. Mary Susan Elizabeth PIERCE. Children: 1. James Jeremiah, Emily, Rainey, Martha T., Ann F., and Katie T. James Jeremiah (Jerry) BROOKS, b. 1844, m. 1883 Sally Ann COMPTON, b. 1857. Their son Lester, b. 1794, who lives near Prospect Hill, says that Jeremiah had an older brother, Bowman, who fought at Guilford Court-house and settled at Flatwoods... However, no written record of a Bowman BROOKS has been found. One of the Tennessee tales is of three brothers, all living to be very old, one 117. Again, there is no written record of who or where.
Lester BROOKS has a picture of his father, in the Army of Northern Virginia, just before the battle of Bull Run, and he has Jeremiah's grandfather clock, put in working condition, incidentally, by James Alvin BROOKS, descendant of the John BROOKS family.
V. Hosey. No trace.
VI. Nancy m. James Oliver BRADSHER, 28 Dec. 1816.
VII. Jane b. 1804, d. 1888, m. Wm. S. MARSHALL. Ivey PLEASANT, Jr. of Leasburg is their descendant. His mother remembered childhood visits to "Aunt Betsy" BROOKS and "Aunt Sally" MURRAY- Jeremiah's daughter and grandaughter- at the homeplace, and remembered the cups and saucers Jeremiah had left them.
VIII. Susan m. _____ NEELEY. A NEELEY had a land grant near Jeremiah, but there is no trace of their descendants now.
IX. Elizabeth b. 1822, d. 1915, never married.
In Tennessee, David BROOKS' children passed on the family story that the BROOKS are Scottish, that they moved from Scotland to London and remained there a year or two before coming to America.
Richard BROWN, Tennessee descendant, remembers Hiram Comer's children-was
reared at the homeplace- and says that they had very dark hair, from their
mother, but red beards, which they proudly said showed their Scottish blood.
BROOKS IN NORTH CAROLINA (continued)
Down through the years the Tennessee BROOKS have used the family name "GREEN", not knowing whence it came until they rediscovered their Person County cousins in 1975 and learned that General Nathanael GREENE had stayed at a BROOKS home after the battle of Guilford Courthouse.
Submitted by the Great-great-great-grandson of Jeremiah BROOKS-
Newton James BROOKS.
CANADIAN CONNECTIONS
Extracted from: BROOKS ROOTS, HOOKS COOKS & CROOKS, George F. BROOKS
Thomas BROOKS, bcrn in England, is probably buried in the Concord-Watertown area of Massachusetts, where he lived along with his son, Gershom, and grandson, Joseph. Nathan, son of Joseph , lived at Harvard, MA and no doubt is buried there. David and Ann raised their seven children at Chester, Vermont, moved to Quebec about 1806 and from there to Ontario. It is believed that they are buried at Rogers Corners Cemetery in Aylmer, Ontario, but most of the markers have been destroyed by vandals. Jonathan and Sally STEARNS BROOKS were buried at the First English Church Cemetery in Malahide Township, Ontario but were moved to one of the Cemeteries in Springfield, Ontario. John D. BROOKS, son of Jonathan and Sally, is buried with his wife, Polly CORLESS, at East Cemetery, Springfield, Ontario. My grandfather, George Warren BROOKS, is buried in lot #176, Maplehill Cemetery, Leroy, Michigan and his first wife, Lucy Ann (SHIVELY-BROOKS) PRICE is buried in Lot #15, Section R, Mt. View Park, Tacoma, WA. Their son, George Llewelyn BROOKS, and his wife, Elizabeth VALENTINE are buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Lansing, MI. Elizabeth's parents, Ezra A. VALENTINE and Frances MYERS, as well as her paternal grandparents, Ezra VALENTINE and Charlotte CHARLTON, are buried in the same plot in Lakeview Cemetery, Ezcanaba., MI. "Liz's" maternal grandmother, Catherine (ULWELLING) MYERS, is buried in Fort Howard Cemetery, Green Bay, WI. The German born grandparents of Lucy BROOKS PRICE, George and Catherine WARNER SHIVELY, are also buried in the BROOKS Plot in Springfield, Ontario. Theresa SCHMIDT, wife of ye editor, George F. BROOKS, is buried with my parents., George "Lou" and "Liz" in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Also buried in this cemetery are: Addison, my brother; Pete CHRISTENSEN, husband of my sister, Lucile; and Frank STANLEY, husband of my sister, Marguerite; and their son George L. STANLEY.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Much of the data in this issue has been collected from miscellaneous bits received from our members during the past four or five years. I hope it will be of help to someone since data from the same family comes from two different sources. Also, the bit of data on the Canadian connection to the American BROOKS I trust will be of some benefit. The book by George F. BROOKS has a note in the back which says he planned to publish two or three volumes. He no longer lives at the Lansing, MI address in the book. Does anyone know his current address, or know if he published the other volumes? His family is also connected to the family in the book by Lee and Mae CORLESS. I am still trying to locate a copy of Volume I of the CORLESS-BROOKS book.
