THE BROOKS FAMILY QUERY EXCHANGE
The purpose of the Brooks Family Query Exchange is to assist researchers
of the various Brooks families and preserve as an historical record Brooks
information that is likely to be lost or available to a limited few. A
library of books and exchange publications is maintained for members benefit.
The BFQE invites contributions of Brook(s) and Brooke(s) related material
for publication. All material should be printed clearly or typed. The
author's, or contributor s name and address should be on at least the
first page. All members may send as many queries as they wish, and there
is no limit on the number of words per query. The editor reserves the right
to edit queries, with no loss of content and information. The deadline
for submission is 30 days prior to the scheduled publication dates, January,
April, July and October.
The BFQE cannot in any way guarantee the accuracy of the information
appearing in the publication, however, every possible effort is made to
strive for accuracy and authenticity. The BFQE cannot be responsible for
the publishing rights of material furnished by our contributors. The Brooks
Family Historical Society and Library is a non-profit organization. Dues
are $9.00 per volume, which normally will be four issues per year. Members
may purchase gift subscriptions for individuals, libraries and societies,
however, these gift subscriptions have no membership rights. Gift subscriptions
are $6.00 per volume. The BFQE is available only by volume which includes
four issues totalling 100-150 pages, with a name and place index in the
fourth issue.
Reprints of all back issues of the Brooks Family Query Exchange and
its predecessor, the Brooks Family Bulletin are available, by volume only.
The cost is $8.00 per single volume, postpaid, and each additional volume
on the same order is $6.00 each. The Brooks Family Bulletin, Vol. I and
II, contain approximately 100 pages each.
EDITOR'S COMMENT: I have had a series of problems during the past several
months which have prevented publication of the BFQE. However, these have
been resolved and Madeline Mills has agreed to help me with the future
issues. The next issue will be published as soon as the index can be prepared,
which hopefully will be no more than two months from this issue. I have
begun to respond to the many letters which have accumulated over the past
several months, and hopefully can answer each by the end of January.

BROOKS, DENNIS, FAIRCHILD, GALLMAN, HERRING, STEWART
Our Willaim BROOKS was born in 1757 maybe in Charles City, VA. As I
understand it several BROOKS families were in that area at the time. He
served in the Rev. War and his pension claim number was R1263, filed in
Troup Co., GA 1833. He lived in Jones Co., GA in 1820, Putnam Co. in 1805
and Hancock Co., probably sometime between 1805 and 1820. William had a
brother Isham BROOKS who also served in the Rev. War but not with William.
Willaim's wife was either Mary or Sarah and they had a daughter Sarah,
b. 1776, and married a William FAIRCHILD ca 1795 in GA. She died ca 1824
in Hind Co., MS. Children of William and Sarah BROOKS FAIRCHILD were Martha,
who married Silas GALLMAN in Baldwin Co., GA in 1811. Harriet married Samuel
HERRING; Elizabeth married Jesse DENNIS; and James Brooks FAIRCHILD married
Rebecca STEWART. It appears that William s wife Sarah was also a BROOKS
before marriage and had a brother John BROOKS. William may have been a
grandson of John BROOKS and wife Sarah.

NOTE TO RESEARCHERS
While trying to trace some BROOKS families in Buncombe Co., NC several months ago, it was found that they settled there ca 1805 (deed records); were listed in the 1820 census of Buncombe Co.; listed in the 1830 census of Walton Co., GA; listed in the 1840 census of Buncombe Co.; and were listed in the 1850 census of Haywood Co., NC. Recently,
VOL. VIII. No.3 BROOKS FAMILY OUERY EXCHANGE Page 66
while studying some maps of the area, I found that in 1830, Georgia had laid claim to some Indian Lands on the French Broad River near Hominy Creek well into the middle of Buncombe Co. As a result, much of Buncombe Co. was in the 1830 census of the "first" Walton Co., GA. The "first" Walton Co., GA was abolished shortly thereafter and the second Walton Co. was later formed in north central GA near Atlanta. The families never moved at all until about 1844 when they moved a short distance from Buncombe into Haywood Co., and about 10 years later moved into Gilmer Co., GA.
BROOKS' IN MASSACHUSSETTS
From: "Historical Manual of the Church of Christ in Lincoln, Mass.",
by Jackson RICHARDSON.
DEACON JOSHUA BROOKS
The first deacon of that name in the Lincoln Church, was the son of
Noah, of Concord, afterwards of Acton, and grandson of Joshua, of Concord,
a tanner, who settled in that part of the town which afterward became a
part of Lincoln, and who married in Watertown, 17 Oct 1653, Hannah MASON,
daughter of Capt. Hugh MASON. This Joshua was the eldest son of Capt. Thomas
and Grace BROOKS, of whom BOND says, "Neither the date of his arrival nor
the place of his embarkation has been ascertained"; but there is reason
to suppose that he came from London. He first settled in Watertown, and
was one of "the Townsmen, then inhabiting," to whom the Beaver Brook ploughlands
were granted in 1636; was admitted a free-man 7 Dec 1636, while residing
at Watertown, and subsequently came to Concord, where he was made Capt.
of the Militia, and received other appointments of honor and trust. His
daughter, Mary, married Capt, Timothy WHEELER. The first deacon of Linclon,
was born 14 Oct 1688, and married Lydia WHEELER, 24 April 1713. His second
wife was widow Mary WHEELER, mother of Deacon Edmund WHEELER, whom he married
4 June 1751. He died 26 June 1768.
Deacon BROOKS was one of the twenty-two persons who built the meeting-house, and one of the founders of the Church. He was moderator of the meeting of the Church and Precluct(?) held in 1748, with reference to obtaining a pastor and with Hon. Chambers RUSSELL and Capt. Samuel BOND, acted as a committee to treat with Mr. LAWRENCE with reference to settlement. He was evidently held in the highest esteem by his fellow-citizens.

DEACON JOSHUA BROOKS, JR.
He was born 9 Jan 1721, united with the Church in 1752, and was elected one of the deacons eleven years after, as the same time with Deacon FARRAR. They were elected to serve in the Office. His character and the esteem in which he was held may be learned from the inscription on his tombstone; "Deacon Joshua BROOKS who worthily sustained that office 20 years in this place". In his life he was remarkable for striking evidence of piety, for singular love to men, for many and exemplary deeds of kindness, and liberality to the ministers of the Gospel, to the poor, the fatherless and the widow. Serene and cheerful in his mind, free, obliging and sincere in conversation he commanded general love and esteem from every human heart. Died, March 1790, in his 70th year.
_________________________________________________________________
DEACON ELEAZER BROOKS
Was the son of Mr. Job BROOKS, and a descendant of the fifth generation
from Capt. Thomas BROOKS. His grandfather was Daniel and his g-grandfather
Joshua BROOKS. His father was thus a cousin of Deacon Joshua, Sr., of this
Church.
The son of a farmer in moderate circumstances, he was expected to follow
the same avocation. Although his advantages for education were inferior
to those possessed by most men of his day, his thirst for knowledge led
him to a diligent improvement of such opportunities as he had for educating
himself, and in this work he made a wise selection of such literary and
scientific works as were within his reach. By this judicious plan of English
reading, with much reflection and by conversation with intelligent men,
he acquired large stores of knowledge and what was more difficult, a thoroughly
disciplined mind. His grasp, discrimination, and mastery of a pure English
style, may be seen in a very able letter addressed to citizens of Boston
on 20 Dec 1773, who had desired an expression of the sentiments of the
town on the question agitating the province.
He was appointed a Lt. of the Militia by Gov. BARNARD in 1768, a Capt.,
by HUTCHINSON in 1775, a Col., by COUNCIL 14 Feb 1776, and a Brig.-Gen.,
15 Oct 1778. He was on the Hill in Concord Village on the 19th of April,
with a small force of patriots there assembled, as the eight hundred British
soldiers, with glittering arms, marched in. It was an exciting moment.
Said the Rev. William EMERSON, the clergyman of the town who was present
to encourage his people. "Let us stand our ground; if we die, let us die
here." To Capt. BROOKS who stood near another said, "Let us go and meet
them." His reply was characteristic of his wisdom and coolness. "No, it
will not do for us to start the war." Promoted from time to time, his military
services were of great value throughout the war. He commanded a regiment
at the battle of White Plains, at which he distinguished himself for his
cool and determined bravery.
He was a member of the Provincial Congress in 1774, and for 27 years in succession was either a member of the House of Representatives, the Senate or the Governor's Council. He was appointed a special Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in 1786. He was a delegate to the Convention at Cambridge in 1779, to form the State Constitution, and to the Convention at Boston in1788, to ratify the Constitution of the United States. Being advanced in life, he declined, in 1801, to be considered a candidate for any office, and retired to the quiet of his farm. He united with the Church in 1764, and "for nothing was he more respected than for his strict probit, real goodness of heart and exemplary piety." In all his important trust he set a novel example of what may be accomplished by a judicious application of one's own powers of mind, and left a character worthy of remembrance and imitation.

DEACON ELEAZER BROOKS, JR.
He was baptized 12 July 1778, (the date of his birth has not been ascertained)
received into the Church in 1800, and elected deacon in 1812, at the same
time with Deacon J. FARRAR. Deacon BROOKS, though not a man of extraordinary
force of character and mental grasp of his father, he improved by much
reading. In mature life he often expressed regret that he had not taken
a course of collegiate study, saying that if his father instead of simply
leaving the matter to his own free
VOL. VIII. No.3 BROOKS FAMILY QUERY EXCHANGE Page 68
choice, had put some constraint upon him, he should have done so. Being unmarried, his home was for many years in the families of Deacon
J. FARRAR, Sr., and Mr. Cyrus SMITH where his society was highly prized
as his conversation was very agreeable and instructive.
Deacon BROOKS was a truly devout man and a very valuable member of the
Church. He early advised the formation of a parish, so that parochial affairs
might be taken away from the meetings of the town, where, after the settlement
of Mr. DEMOND, there was a sharp division of parties, and perhaps did more
to effect the measure than any other man. His prudence, foresight and wise
judgement were of highest value to the Church in the trying experiences
of that transition period. Deacon BROOKS went to the West in the summer
of 1836, and for several years lived in Quincy and Carthage, Illinois.
Rev. Asa TURNER, well known as "Father TURNER" was then pastor of the Congregational
Church at Quincy. Deacon BROOKS attended his preaching for some time but
did not unite with the Church, as Mr. TURNER was an ardent advocate of
New School doctrines in theology (a pupil of Dr. N. W. TAYLOR), while Deacon
B's Calvinism was of the Hopkinsian type. Like his father, he had been
a thoughtful reader of theological works, and held his opinions firmly
as the following incident may show. Many years ago he was at work with
other men in one of the meadows on the Concord River. Deacon B breaks the
silence by saying to his friend J. S., "Do you believe in the five points
of Calvinism?" S. had read Dr. HOPKINS somehat and answered, "Yes, I think
I do.", and with the same breath put this more practical question to Deacon
B. "Can you fix the particular time when you experienced a change of heart?"
To which Deacon B. replied, "No, I don't know as I can, but I have a hope
that I would not give up for the world."
After the Presbyterian Church was formed in Quincy, he attended there partly on account of his friendship for Dr. NELSON who often supplied the pulpit. Removing to Newtown, there being no Congregational Church in the place at that time, he united with the Presbyterian Church, by letter from this church, having been dismissed 5 Oct 1846. He had in Newtown many Christian friends, whose society he enjoyed very much. The Saviour's presence cheered him at all times. When his father called him he was reading. He died in October 1860, at the age of 82 years.

DONORS TO THE CHURCH
Joseph BROOKS, a son of Joshua, the tanner, and uncle of Deacon Joshua,
owned the estate now in the possession of Capt. S. B. THOMPSON. He was
distinguished for his liberality, and was evidently very deeply interested
in the formation of the Church. Before the tower was ready to receive it,
he presented the town with a bell, and the note which accompanied it shows
him to have been a man of the kindest feelings toward his fellow-citizens
and alive to everything that concerned their welfare; "Whereas, by the
all-disposing providence of God by whom the bounds of men's habitations
are set, I have had my residence within the bounds of the town of Linclon,
and that, remarkably in that part of the several towns of which the town
of Linconl was made, wherein I have lived in unity and good agreement;
and for the love and regard that I have for the inhabitants of said town,
I do hereby give to the inhabitants of said town the bell that now hangs
upon the steeple at the meeting-house in said town, for the town's use
forever.
Hereunto I subscribe your hearty friend and humble servant.
Lincoln, 26 October 1756.
VOL. VIII. No.3 BROOKS FAMILY QUERY EXCHANGE Page 69
Capts. CUTLER and BOND and Lt. John HOAR were appointed a committee to expess the thanks of the town to Mr. BROOKS for his gift. A part of the communion plate of the church was also presented by him. He died 17 Sep 1759, in the 79th year of his age, and though he had several children, left 388 pounds for a school fund, which has been of great service to the town, and now is more than 1200 pounds. Inventory of his estate, 1470 pounds.

MISCELLANEOUS DATES AND DATA
1620 Migration of the first Brooks' to America.
1625 MACKENZIE in his "Colonial Families of the United States" states
that the ancestor of the BROOKS Family was Henry BROOKS who came to America
in 1625, apparently from Scotland, since the coat of arms indicates he
is of Scotch ancestry.
1630 A writer in the Boston and Eastern Mass. Genealogy (Vol. 2, page
652) states that Henry BROOKS came from Scotland and landed in Boston in
the year 1630.
1638 The first record of Henry BROOKS is recorded in Concord, MA 14
Mar 1638, and is the date he was given the rights of a freeman.
1687 From page 695 of the "The History of Gloucester and Salem and Cumberland
County", by CUSHING and SHEPPARD, "About 1687 a company of Welsh Baptist,
a part of Rev. John MYLES' company from Swansea, MA came from there to
Cohansey and settled in the neighborhood of Bowentown, NJ, where they built
a log meeting house and were a regularly-organized church, with Rev. Timothy
BROOKS, Jr. as pastor (grandson of Henry BROOKS)."
1690 Robert Peacock BROOKS' book "Timothy BROOKS of Massachussetts"
states, "During the summer of 1690 a band of Welsh Baptist (mostly Seventh
Day Worshippers) from Swansea, MA, came to the Cohansey Settlement. Among
these were Timothy BARRETTS, Sr. m Rev. Timothy BROOKS, Jr., the BOWENS,
the BARRETTS and the SWINNEYS. The BOWENS and the BROOKS' moved farther
inland to the section of Raodstown. Here, on the road leading to the Bridge
(Bridgeton) they bought farms and named their setlement Bowentown. The
BARRETTS located on a run which is called to this day Barretts Run.
James BROOKS, 7th generation descendant of Henry BROOKS, born 27 July
1774, married Hannah, daughter of Furman and Rhoda LAWRENCE MULFORD. (Furman
MULFORD was a private in the 3rd Battalion, State Troops, with Col. SUMMERS
in the Rev. War. He lived at Mannington Mill near
VOL. VIII. No.3 BROOKS FAMILY QUERY EXCHANGE Page 72
Salem, NJ.) James and Hannah were married 4 Sep 1802 and lived at Roadstown.
Both died of cholera on 9 Aug 1849 and are buried at the Cohansey Baptist
Cemetery at Roadstown. Their monument is a marble spire, the first monument
in the 13th row counting from the Bridgeton side of the Cemetery, towards
the church. They had five children, one of which was Lewis M. BROOKS.
James had a cabinetmakers shop in Salem as early a 1798. He moved to Roadstown in 1822 and lived and died in the old brick house on the right side of the road from the Bridgeton Baptist Cemetery (later owned by the GARRISONS). This house was built by John REMINGTON in 1728. Between 1822 and 1900 James and his descendants Lewis M. and Norris P. BROOKS all lived in this house. The cabinet makers shop was reportedly located between the brick house and the road, and desks, furniture and caskets were made there.
