THE BROOKS FAMILY QUERY EXCHANGE

The purpose of the Brooks Family query Exchange is to assist researchers of the various Brooks families and preserve as an historical record Brooks information that is likely to be lost or available to a limited few. Members may purchase gift subscriptions for individuals, libraries or societies, however) these individuals) libraries and societies have no membership rights. A gift subscription is $8.00 per volume. All members may send as many queries as they wish and there is no limit on the number of words per query. Your editor retains permission to edit queries, with no loss of content and information.
The Exchange is available only by volume, which includes four issues,
and will not be sold separately by issue. The Exchange is printed quarterly
in May, August, November and February. The deadline for submissions is
the 15th of the month prior to the month of issue.
EDITOR'S COMMENTS
The transition from the previous editor, Mrs. Mills, to me is nearly complete and I'm trying to familiarize myself with the information accumulated during the past couple of months. The November issue is somewhat late but the February issue should be back on schedule. After completing the first issue I can appreciate the effort past editors have expended in printing the Query Exchange. I plan no major changes to the publication but would like to propose a couple of minor changes which I will present to you in the near future.
I know relatively little about my family but by way of introduction I have taken the liberty of inserting a couple of queries and a pedigree chart in this issue. Although I have been in Maryland for the past 14 years, I was born "Between-the-Rivers" in Lyon Co., KY, and have lived in KY, Ohio, NY, PA, NV and MD since I married. My two sons and their families are in Las Vegas and my two daughters live in MD. During the following months I hope we may be of mutual assistance in locating tracks of our ancestors. Hays Brooks

(A Supplement to the 1810 census of Virginia; tax lists of the counties
for which the census is missing. Transcribed & edited by Netti Schreiner-Yantis,
1971)
The census enumerations of 18 of the Virginia counties were destroyed
by the British when they burned the capital during the war of 1812. Although
the census is not extant for these counties, we are fortunate in having
something which may be used as a substitute-the Personal Property Tax Lists.
Counties included are Gabell, Grayson, Greenbrier, Halifax, Hardy, Henry,
James City, King William, Lee, Louisa, Mecklenburg, Middlesex, Nansemond,
Northhampton, Orange, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Russell, and Tazewell.
