LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Mrs. Neely Brooks, Box, 66, Tahoka, TX 79373 writes, "Enjoyed the first issue and I wish you the best for all future issues. The first one was great."

Janie Vickery, 1219 Division, Sulphur, OK 73086 writes, "I am enjoying my copy of the Query Exchange which arrived today."

Carson and Georgene Gallagher, 7408 Davis Street, Morton Grove, IL writes, "We are truly thrilled with your letter and society. It is absolutely wonderful. Please put us on your membership and mailing list. You have undertaken something quite worthwhile and "consuming". My first book, A Genealogy of the 1837 Leininger Family, (my father) will be published this month, so I know the commitment, financial problems, frustrations and wonderful rewards in seeing something like this 'take off'. We are grateful."

Wahner Brooks, 2855 South Madison, Yuma, AZ 85364, "I found your first issue of the Exchange very interesting and promising. However, I have a question that I suspect you may find rather naive. Perhaps, though, others would be interested in the answer, too. I noticed a total lack of source citations in the queries. Are these being edited out to save space, assuming individual correspondence will correct this lack? It would certainly reduce input effort if this is the case."

(From The Editor) The queries are not being edited. We do however, use general query abbreviations. Readers?

Evelynne Alvis, 1210 Shopping, Weatherford, OK 73096 writes, 'Vo1ume I, Issue 1 of The Brooks Family Query Exchange came today. It is certainly well done and I feel sure will be a valuable tool to those of us with Brooks loose ends."

Mr. Marion B. Brunson, Route 3, Box 14-M, Elba, AL 36323 writes, "I need some early Brooks genealogy and hope I can obtain it through your Exchange and also will be able to share some data which I have."

Anne Hinton, 603 Rockford Ave., Apt. 3, Dayton, OH 45405 writes, "Please warn your seekers when they ask the Archives for a veterans record to tell them you want BOTH HIS SELECTED AND NON-SELECTED records." After I learned this I proved a line.

Pat Ham, 623 Water Street, Paoli, IN 47454, "I really appreciate your efforts on behalf of all Brooks relatives. I am eager to get the November issue with family group sheets. Thanks again for your help."

W. Leigh Brookes, P.O. Box 403, Sweetwater, TX 79556 writes, "I very much enjoyed the first edition of your publication and plan to continue my subscription as long as you continue it. Your time and trouble is very much appreciated and we all hope you realize that."

Mrs. Patrick A. Yates, P.O. Box 2047, Ridgecrest, CA 93555 writes, "Thank you for answering my inquiry so promptly, and for answering all my questions. I am delighted to finally find a publication relating to Brooks.' I have been working on my husband's Brooks family for years and although I have made considerable progress, I thought I was probably the only one in the world interested in this family. "

Clifton Rowland Brooks, 1301 El Finito Way, Santa Ana, CA 92705, "I received the first issue of the Exchange and Adgie and I are quite pleased."

BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT

Mr. and Mrs. Lee M. Corless, 610 Roslyn Road, Grosse Point, MI 48236 have asked us to announce their publication, Descendants of Jesseand Polly (Chase) Corless and David and ~ (Clark) Brooks, with the closely related families of Bailey, Charlton, Chase, Dexter, Harris, Hildreth, Luethe, Newell, Sham, Welch, Whaley, and Woolley.

The book has 460 pages, is hardbound, and the index contains over 7500 names. It is divided into three parts - Corless, Brooks, and Related Families, with a chapter being devoted to each of the related families. Six of these families were related to the Corless lines, and six to the Brooks lines by two or more marriages.

They have included available data on the children of the females, and a limited amount for the grandchildren, which they have found contrary to most family histories.

The price is $13.50, plus the shipping charges. The cost may be paid in installments, if desired, but it will be your responsibility to complete payments before shipment is made.

Mr. and Mrs. Corless ask that you please remember that in a few short years, children and grandchildren will be grown up, and in many cases, scattered about the country, and perhaps the world. When a complete printing has been sold out, there will be no more copies.

They say the book is much more comprehensive than anticipated, and that fact plus illness and other problems, delayed completion far beyond their earlier thinking. They trust you will find the work to be informative and interesting.

FAMILY HISTORY STILL AVAILABLE

Mr. John M. Jones, 2011 Ferry Avenue, T-9, Camden, NJ 08104 has advised us that he has a few remaining copies of his 1977 book, History and Genealogyof the Jones and Brooks Families of Escambia County, Alabama, which he would be glad to give away free to libraries or to members as long as they last. We would like to thank Mr. Jones for contributing a copy to our Brooks Family Society Library.

HISTORY OF MILES BROOKS

Mrs. William P. Hensel, Stanford, IL 61701 advised that she compiled a history on
Miles Brooks, a brother to George Brooks. She had 150 copies (105 pages) of this
Genealogy printed and has sold practically all of them. She has a few left, but due
to the increase in cost of printing and binding her actual cost is $38.50 each.

REPRINT AVAILABLE

Janie Vickery, 1219 Division, Sulphur, OK 73086 writes that the book, Brooksand
Kindred Families by Ida Brooks Kellam, 1950, has been reprinted and is available from
Ray and Virginia Johnson, 143 Jennifer Lane, Lilburn, GA 30247 for $13.00.

If you know of a recent publication, or reprint, of a Brooks family history, please write us advising the name and address where it can be ordered, and include the price if that information is available to you.

Many genealogists do some researching on their summer vacations. Did you? If so, write and share your experiences while searching for your Brooks kin. Did you attend a family reunion this summer? Tell us about it.

Jonathan BROOKS continued to serve in Captain Houdin 's company and regiment until Apr 1782 when he was transferred to the first company commanded by Capt. MILLS of the first Massachusetts regt. He continued to serve until Aug when being sick he was sent to the hospital in Philadelphia. His regiment and company were in Philadelphia because of mutiny in the Pennsylvania corps. He remained in the hospital sick until Oct of 1782 when he rejoined his regiment and returned with them to West Point. He was discharged in Nov of 1782 on account of ill health, and his discharge was signed by General McDOUGAL. He applied for his pension in 1818.

Jonathan settled a military tract in Fabius, Onadaga Co., New York. In 1820 he was remarried to widow Mrs. Mary Anne Pope who had a daughter Mariette Pope, age 2. Jonathan's children and approximate birth dates are:

The following article was written and contributed by John BROOKS THRELFALL, 5518 Barton Road, Madison, WI 53711. This article previously appeared in THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST.

THOMAS BROOKS OF WATERTOWN AND CONCORD

Thomas BROOKS and his wife first appear on record in New England at Watertown, Mass., in July 1636 when he received a grant of land. The next February he received a four-acre lot, one acre per person being the allotment. However, he must have had three children with him then, a discrepancy not explained. He soon moved to Concord where he was appointed constable in 1638, and appraiser of livestock in 1640. He was representative to the General Court from Concord in 1642 and for four years after 1650. In 1640 he was appointed to prevent drunkenness among the Indians. In 1657 he purchased for £5 from the Commissioners of the General Court the right of carrying on the fur trade in Concord. In 1660 he and his son-in-law, Timothy Wheeler, jointly bought of Edward Collins for £404, 400 acres in Medford, a house and some artifacts. One third of it was for Wheeler (Middlesex Deeds 2:118). Grace Brooks, his wife, died 12 May 1664 and the next October he sold his house and lot in Concord to John Wheeler (ibid.3:169) and presumably went to live with one of his children, for he died in Concord 21 May 1667, intestate. His three sons and son-in-law presented an inventory of his estate for probate on 16 June 1667 and the next day signed an agreement for the division of his estate. Son Joshua was to have a double portion, the usual custom for the eldest son. This document certainly establishes the living heirs and eliminates the several other Brooks persons who have sometimes been suggested as children. See Bond's GENEALOGIES AND HISTORY OF WATERTOWN for the full text of the agreement.

Neither the date of his arrival in New England nor the place of his departure is known. He could hardly have been the Thomas Brooks who embarked in May 1635, then aged 20, in company with the Rev. Peter Bulkley, if his second son Caleb was born about 1632, unless the age is incorrect.

Children:

i. Mary, probably eldest child; m. Capt. Timothy Wheeler (3rd wife) after 1643; 2 daughters. She d. 4 Oct. 1693, testate.
1 ii. Joshua, b. probably about 1630 in England.
2 iii. Caleb, b. about 1632, probably in England.
3 iv. Gershom
(Note: Hannah Brooks who m., as 2nd wife, Thomas Fox, at Concord, 13 Dec. 1647, has been suggested as another daughter Thomas Fox d. 12 April 1658 and in his will mentions his uncle Thomas Brooks. While the term uncle was often used loosely then and might conceivably have been used to mean father-in-law, she or her children would surely have been among the heirs of Thomas Brooks if she had been a daughter. Her date of death is unknown. More likely she was a niece of Thomas Brooks and Thomas Fox was a nephew by marriage only. She was probably a daughter of Henry Brooks who first settled at Concord, then moved on to Woburn. Thus, most likely, Thomas and Henry Brooks were brothers and it may have been Henry who influenced Thomas to move from Watertown to Concord.)
1. Joshua2 BROOKS (Thomas1) was born about 1630. On 17 Oct. 1653 he married at Watertown, Hannah Mason, born there 23 Sept. 1636, daughter of Capt. Hugh and Hester (Wells) Mason. It is supposed that he learned his trade of tanner from Captain Mason, and, soon after, married his daughter who was just seventeen. He settled in that part of Concord which became Lincoln and, it is supposed, sold his share of his paternal estate in Medford to his brother Caleb who settled there. Deeds, however, do not show it. He was a captain in the militia and a deacon in the church. On 11 Nov. 1695, with consent of his wife, he sold his Concord lands by four deeds to his sons Noah, Daniel, Joseph and Job. Each deed described several parcels, all of which were in the same area and were bounded by lands of these four brothers. He and Hannah both signed by mark. Noah paid £59, Daniel £59, Joseph £50, and Job £35. By a deed of 24 Aug. 1697, Noah Brooks, Daniel Brooks Sen., Joseph Brooks Sen., Benjamin Pierce of Watertown, Benjamin Whittmore and

4. Noah3 BROOKS (Joshua2, Thomas1) was born about 1656 in Concord, and died in Lincoln, 1 Feb. 1738/9 in his 82nd year. He married Dorothy Potter, died 15 March 1752 in her 90th year, daughter of Luke and Dorothy (Edmunds) Potter. The marriage is proved by the will of Luke Potter in which he bequeathed to his daughter Dorothy Brooks. It should also be noted that Noah's sister Grace married Judah Potter, brother of Dorothy. In 1684 Noah Brooks was a witness to an Indian deed. He was selectman in 1702, 1704 wand 1709. They lived in Concord until 3 July 1735 when Lincoln was set off from Concord and incorporated, and his farm was thus included in the new town. He, his brothers and sister Esther, all opposed this change and signed a petition against it but to no avail (Register 12:20). Their grave stones are still extant in the old Hill cemetery though all that is left of his is the bottom part with his age.

v. Anna, b. 26 March 1725; m. -----Hoar.

8. Joseph3 BROOKS (Gershom2, Thomas1) was born about July, August, or early September, 1682. This we learn from his guardianship papers among which is a bond:

Know all men by these presents that we Joseph Brooks Senr of Concord, Edward Bridge of Roxbury in ye county of Essex, and Daniel Brooks junr in said Concord in ye county of Midex . . . stand firmly bound and obliged unto James Russell Esq. Judge of Probate for ye county ... dated the 30th day of June Anno Dom 1701 in ye 13th year of his Majesties Reign. The condition of this psent obligation is such that if ye above bounden Joseph Brooks Senr of Concord ... guardian to his cousin Joseph Brooks son of Gershom Brooks late of sd Concord yeoman deces., a minor of eighteen years of age ... (Edward Bridge was a brother-in-law and Daniel Brooks was older brother of young Joseph Brooks.)

Being 18 at this time means he was born between 1 July 1682 and 29 June 1683. He died 17 Sept. 1759 in his 78th year per grave stone in Lincoln. Accordingly, he was born between 18 Sept. 1681 and 16 Sept. 1682. Thus he must have been born in July, August or the first half of September 1682 (Middlesex Probate 2829).

When of Weston, he married 29 July 1725, Jane Jennison of Sudbury, widow of Peter Jennison who died 17 Jan. 1723. Jane had seven children by her first marriage, and she died 16 Nov. 1753 in her 70th year, so was born about 1684. In his will of 19 March 1757, he bequeathed to his "sons-in-law" Peter Jeneson, Israel Jeneson, Robert Jeneson and Samuel Jeneson, to his "daughters-in-law" Sarah Severen, Jane How, and his three"grandchildren"born of his "daughter-in-law" Eunice Richardson deceased. These were his step-children. He also bequeathed to his kinsmen David, Timothy, Daniel, and Josiah Brooks and Anna Hoar, who were the five children of his brother Daniel. Then he bequeathed to the two children of his kinsman Eben Miriam, deceased. This Ebenezer Merriam was apparently his nephew by his sister Elizabeth (Brooks) Merriam (Middlesex Probate 2858).

Child:

Joseph, b. Weston, 14 June 1726, d. 7 Sept. 1749 in 24th year, "only son of Joseph Brooks" (g.s. at Lincoln).

The following article which was written by Miriam Brightman Eddy also appeared in THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST. This was contributed by John BROOKS THRELFALL.

THOMAS, HENRY AND HANNAH BROOKS OF CONCORD

There has been much speculation as to the relationship of the two early settlers of Concord, Massachusetts, Thomas and Henry Brooks, particularly as to whether these two men were brothers and as to which of them was the father of a daughter named Hannah.

Both Henry Bond, GENEALOGY OF THE FAMILIES AND DESCENDANTS OF THE EARLY SETTLERS OF WATERTOWN (1860) and Charles Edward Potter, GENEALOGIES OF SOME OLD FAMILIES OF CONCORD, MASSACHUSETTS (1887) make Hannah a daughter of Thomas. The most recent writer to say

Vol. I No. 2         THE BROOKS FAMILY QUERY EXCHANGE         Page 14

anything on the subject is John Brooks Threlfall who, in an article on the Thomas Brooks family (TAG 53:94-100), appends a note in which he leaves out Hannah from his list of the children of Thomas and suggests that she may have been a daughter of Henry Brooks, also of Concord, alluding to the fact that the will of Thomas Fox, who was the husband of this Hannah, refers to Thomas Brooks as uncle. Mr. Threlfall states that the word uncle was often used loosely in the colonial period and even supposes that it could sometimes mean father-in-law. If so, it is rather strange that the Oxford Dictionary fails to include any such looseness in the use of the word uncle, all examples cited having the same meaning as we now attach to the word, except in such phrases as "Welsh uncle," which seems to mean a first cousin once removed, or "Dutch uncle," a person soundly rebuking someone for a fault, "Uncle Sam" and "Uncle George," both referring to the government. It is true that words denoting other relationships, "brother," "son," "cousin and their feminine counterparts did in the 17th century often mean something different from the current meaning.

Henry Brooks was in Concord as early as 1639, and had a son Joseph born there on "12o (2o) 1641, that is, in all probability, 12 April 1641, but this Joseph is not heard of afterward and doubtless died young. The name of the first wife, the mother of all the children, is not found, nor do we know when she died, but by 1649 Henry had moved to Woburn at which date he had at least one child who had married. Henry married, secondly, at Woburn, a woman named Susanna who is said in Belle Preston's BASSETT-PRESTON ANCESTRY (1930), p.47, to have been a Bradford, widow of Ezekiel Richardson who had died at Woburn on 21 Oct. 1647. Susanna, whatever her maiden name was, died 15 Sept. 1681, and Henry married, thirdly, 12 July 1682, Annis Jaquith, probably a widow. Six days later, on 18 July 1682, Henry executed his will, stating that he was a clothier aged 91 years, and providing for his wife Annis, three sons and two daughters, as well as several grandchildren. He died at Woburn 12 April 1683. (See also John Adams Vinton, THE RICHARDSON MEMORIAL (1876), p. 37).

An abstract of the will of Henry Brooks is printed in the Hon. Edward F. Johnson's ABSTRACTS OF EARLY WOBURN DEEDS, p. 31, and Henry names sons John, Timothy and Isaac (the "youngest son"), son-in-law John Mousall, daughter Sarah (wife of John Mousall), and daughter Lester; and Isaac, Henry and Miriam, children of son Isaac.

The Concord Vital Records (p. 6) show the marriage of Thomas ffox and Hanath Brookes who were married 13th (10) 1647, i.e. 13 Dec. 1647. This was a second marriage for Thomas Fox whose death is recorded in the same source (p. 8) as "Thomas ffoxce husband to hana ffoxce his wife, died: 14 april: 1658." Thomas left a will in which he mentions "uncle Thomas Brooks" (James Savage, GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF NEW ENGLAND 2:196). After the death of Thomas Fox, Hannah went to New London, Connecticut, and there married ca. 1661 Andrew Lester who had been in Gloucester, Mass., before his removal to New London. Charles Dyer Parkhurst's manuscript "New London, Connecticut, and Vicinity: Early Settlers," vol. 34; she is called "Ann, Henry --widow of Thos. Fox." Andrew died at New London, 7 Jan. 1669/70 (New London Co. Court Records 2:4). In 1670, as "Widow Lester," Hannah was received into Mr. Bradstreet's church, having come from the church at Concord (Frances M. Caulkin, HISTORY OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT (1895), p. 193). Hannah married, thirdly, 24 April 1672, Isaac Willey of Charlestown and he died about 1685 (Bradley Bateman Ridge, "Bateman Genealogy" manuscript, copy in my possession). Miss Caulkins (p. 287) mentions "Widow Anna Willey, sometime wife to Andrew Lester, Sen., deceased." In equating the Hannah or Ann Fox who married Andrew Lester with the Hanath Brookes who married Thomas Fox at Concord, there is but one slight difficulty. Henry Brooks apparently did not know that his daughter had married a third time when he made his will in 1682, or at age 91 he was forgetful of her third marriage.

On the basis of Parkhurst (3:129, citing "Mr. Douglas") and the Bassett-Preston Genealogy, the complete list of Henry Brooks' children goes as follows:

i. Hannah, also called Anna, b. ca. 1620, d. 1692 (Caulkins); m. (1) 13 Dec. 1647;
(2) ca. 1661 Andrew Lester; (3) 24 April 1672, Isaac Willey.

While reviewing "One Hundred Years of Fayetteville" (Arkansas) 1828-1928 by William S. Campbell, I made note of the following Brooks names which were mentioned in this history.

CIVIL WAR:

Among those active in enlisting, recruiting, commanding and fighting, who lived in Fayetteville were Col. Wm. H. Brooks ........., and a long list of men in command of companies and in subordinate official capacities, as well as men who bore the brunt of rank and file of Confederate forces. Among those active in Union forces were ...... Col. Edward H. Brooks, brother of the Confederate Col. Wm. H. Brooks, and likewise a large number of men who saw official service throughout the war as well as the rank and file who fell or survived the struggle.

Capt. Sam R. Bell of Fayetteville raised Company C, 1st Regiment Arkansas Confederates, mustering in here. Among the privates were such well remembered names as ..... W.H. Brooks

On October 3, 1864, Maj.-Genl. Fagan made an attack on Fayetteville from the west, but failed to drive the Federals out. While the Federals held Fayetteville the Confederates under Col. W.H. Brooks threatened them with four regiments under Colonels S.W. Peel, Ras Stirman, D.H. Reynolds, and Capt. Wm. Brown. Brooks sent in a demand for surrender. Col. T.J. Hunt, in command at the time replied to come and take it. Federal scouting parties were driven in. Hunt was fearful of an attack and fortified the town with trenches, barricading the streets with what was termed the wreck of ruins. Col.. Brooks considered the situation, and did not attack. Neither commander was sure of results, and Brooks, Peel, nor Stirman had any desire to destroy property or kill their friends and neighbors.

The Missionary Baptist Church was organized June, 1858. E.W. Brooks was mentioned as being among the board of deacons at the writing of this book.

The Fayetteville Republican came to Fayetteville by way of West Fork in 1885, W.M.
Simpson being the first owner. In 1886, it was sold to Thomas Brooks and Damon Clark. They enlarged the paper and soon had a subscription list of 1,500.

About 1892, Thomas Brooks established the Washington County Review, over on the east side of the square. It was republican in politics. It was absorbed by D.C. Ambrose and Son who had bought the Fayetteville Republican from Brooks and Clark in 1890, in the year 1913.

The following information was contributed by Mrs. R. Anderson, 1360 W. Midland, Auburn, MI 48611.

TAKEN FROM THE BOSTON TRANSCRIPT MARCH 1937

"The Lincoln branch of the Brooks family (Noah) and the Acton branch (Daniel) came from Joshua of Concord, son of Thomas of Watertown. The Brooks Tavern was built on Acton Common by Daniel Brooks and occupied by three succeeding generations, Job, Daniel, and Paul. The second Daniel married Caroline Prescott of Pepperell. Her relative Col. Prescott was in the inn in 1775. The Brooks Tavern was on the stage line with Wright's Tavern, Concord, and Howe's Tavern, Sudbury (Longfellows's Wayside). The Brooks Tavern is mentioned twelve times in Fletcher's Town History of Acton. The old Brooks house, now standing opposite the Town Hall, Acton Center, was built in 1760 from two earlier taverns, one being the original Brooks Tavern built by the first Daniel Brooks."
