HONORING JEFFREY P. BROOKS

|
Dear Mrs. Preston,
I enjoyed talking with you Friday and settling the problems concerning
the editorship of The Brooks Family Bulletin. You are qualified,
I know, to take on this responsibility of directing The Brooks Family Historical
Society and I look forward to seeing your first issue. Offset printing
is a great improvement and establishing a library in your home to research
requests for information will be a tremendous asset too. The BFB began
as a small readership. Today it has grown into a society and library. That
is quite a growth record. In a few years, I expect the BFB to be recognized
as one of the top family genealogical publications.
My two years with the society have been very satisfying. I have met
some very nice congenial people who have always been happy to share their
material and knowledge. I have never regretted establishing the BFB but
I do regret not having the time to give the members the quality and attention
they deserve. I am sure the 1972 year was a trying year for every-one.
Eighteen hours of college per semester plus the yearbook work left too
little time for the BFB. This year seems to be going about the same and
it would be impossible for me to consider attempting the BFB again. I am
very happy, Mrs. Preston, that you came to my rescue, but even happier
you came to the rescue of the BFB.
I am sure members will subscribe for the 1974 year when they see the
nice job you do with the October issue. It is bound to be a great success
Everyone will do their part as they have in the past in supporting you
as director of The Brooks Family Historical Society and Library because
we all want it to be successful and prosperous.
Wishing you the best in everything, I remain,

Brook

FIRE DESTROYED FILES OF 20 MILLION VETS
St. Louis--UPI: Missouri
The four-day fire at the United States Military Personnel Records Center earlier this month destroyed the files of nearly 20 million veterans, government officials said yesterday.
The records were among 56 million kept in the two-square-block building in suburban Overland. About 22 million records of Army and Air Force personnel were stored on the top floor of the six-story center. At least 90 percent of the top floor records were destroyed in the blaze, which broke out July 12, 1973.
Walter W. Stender of the National Archives in Washington said there were no duplicates of most of the burned records "because to micro-film 56 million files would cost $145 million. " (Editors note: Now duplication will cost much more than this.)
"Some of these records will never need to be replaced, anyway." Stender said. "If a man was in the Army in 1912 and he's dead, who would ever want the records?" (Editor's note: What a foolish statement!) Basically, the lost records include virtually all documents of Army personnel from 1912 to 1959 and Air Force personnel from 1947 to 1963, Stender said.
The Veterans Administration has said servicemen and relatives now receiving
benefits should experience no problems because separate records are kept
by the VA. Problems would arise in cases where no previous application
for benefits was made, the VA said.
(Editor's note: The last is a big loss to all genealogists. Why not
write to Mr. Stender. After the fire I tried for several days to get a
call through to the Records Center and only an intercept operator came
on the line. It's the letters of application and family names and location
that are a great loss to us. Let him know how valuable these records are
so hereafter they will microfilm the records. The microfilming was not
done as they felt the cost too high. Now it will cost ten times or more:
and some will be lost forever. Write your Congressman--the National Archives.)
VERY, VERY, URGENT Write your congressman immediately! There
is a law Congress to close ALL CENSUS RECORDS! 776 HR93-246. Let
him know what an essential part of family research these records are.
The 1900 Census will be available through the Census Bureau at Pittsburgh,
Kansas, by the end of 1973. You must show genuine interest in family research
and show proof of belonging to the family. These records will not be open
for general inspection.

Daniel Brooks--continued
Second Generation-- continued
2-4 continued) He was educated in district schools of Livings tone,
Erie County and at East Aurora Academy. For many years after and before
the Civil War he taught school in New York, Missouri, and South Dakota.
It was while teaching in a place called Williston, New York, that a recruiting
officer r came to the school house one day in April 1862 and James and
a number of his boy pupils enlisted. That evening the officer came home
with him and James and his older brother, George, and a neighbor's son,
William Radman, enlisted. They were mustered into service soon after at
Leroy, New York. James still had two weeks of school to teach and he finished
the term in his soldier's blue.
He served in the war from the Spring of 1862 until the close. He fought
in a number of battles. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Wilderness
in 1864 and was held in Libby and Salisbury prisons. He was then discharged
and granted a furlough home, a most pitiful shadow of his former self.
The day following his arrival he collapsed and for weeks lay at the point
of death, recognizing no person, not even father or mother. In June 1865
he returned to his regiment and was honorably discharged at the close of
the war.
James was 5 feet 7 inches tall, fair complexion, grey eyes and light
hair. He died at Council Bluffs, IA, January 20, 1915. (This information
was secured from James' sister, Sarah Brooks Holmes.)
James H. Brooks was a private of Captain Fields Co. G, 94 Regiment of
New York State Volunteers. He was enrolled on the 28 day of February 1862
to serve three years or the duration of the war. He was discharged from
service of the US on July 6, 1865, at Elmira, New York, age 24 years. (This
last information was provided by a grand-daughter. Note that one account
says he enrolled in February and the other April.
2-5 Mary Anne, daughter of Daniel and Lydia (Lay) Brooks was born in
Livingston County, NY, May 20 1842; married George D. Eddy at Cowlesville,
NY, September 1862. Their children were:

No further record.
No record found of Mary Anne's death but she apparently died young.

Second generation--continued
2-6 Sarah Elizabeth, daughter of Daniel and Lydia (Lay) Brooks, was born in Livingston County, New York, 18 October 1847; married Chester C. Holmes at Cowlesville, NY, 11 September 1865. There were no children. Homer died in Brockport, NY, 10 March 1916. Sarah died in Rochester, NY, 06 November 1938. Homer was a Civil War veteran.

brilliant and accomplished, she sang beautifully and painted. She had a
quiet dignity and kept very keen until she died at the age of 91.
