LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

JOB OPPORTUNITY:

EDITOR - Small established family genealogical publication of the Brooks Family Historical Society would like would like a new editor. The Brooks Family Bulletin is well known and respected among genealogical readerships. It has a membership of 102 with many exchanges.

REQUIREMENTS - Applicants must be between the ages of 9 and 90. Non-working individuals or those with an eight hour working day may enjoy this opportunity and will be able to handle the editorship also.

BENEFITS - You may exchange with other publications in geographical areas you are interested in thereby reducing your own personal research expenses and, at the same time, keeping abreast with changes and new discoveries in the genealogical field as well as seeing the layout of other publications. You will gain a wealth of Brook, Brooke, Brookes, and Brooks family records.

PRINTING - The BFB is presently printed on a mimeograph machine belonging to Christ Episcopal Church free of charge. Perhaps your church or a society of which you are a member will allow you to use their machine. or, perhaps the BFB would be willing to help towards a purchase of a mimeograph machine for the Society.

EXPENSES - The present $3.00 subscription fee is sufficient to pay expenses but with rising paper, ink, stencil, postage, Etc. prices, a higher subscription fee is recommended. . An alternative to rasing the price would be to reduce the size of the publication.

Dear subscribers;

In the coming school year to begin September 6. I shall be a Sophmore at Wentworth Military Academy and Editor of the school's yearbook. In the past, as I'm sure you realize, I have been barely able to keep up with typing stencils and answering mail. I feel another editor would be able to spend the time necessary. My two years as Editor of the BFB have been exciting, educational, fascinating, and rewarding. My education, however, must have first priority.

If you would be interested in being Editor of the BFB, please contact me immediately If there are no volunteers, there will be no BFB. I would like to know as soon as possible who the new editor will be so announcements can be sent to publications around the country and subscribers will know there to send their dues. If you have any questions regarding the editorship of the BFB, feel free to call upon me.

It will be a great disappointment to me personally to see this publication for which

I have worked so hard to organize, develope, and publish fail for lack of an editor.

I pray one of you will feel moved to accept this position.

Your Editor,

Jeffrey P. Brooks

Without being egotistical, I would like to share with you letters I have received while Editor of the BFB.. Dedicated people like you make the BFB well worth the effort.

"Again let me say how much I appreciate your giving us this fine bulletin; the best
of several 'name publications I receive. It is much needed."

"Thank goodness there is someone doing just what you are doing, giving me the opportunity to contact some one from whom I may get help in this line."

"Keep up the good work on your BFB. Enjoy it so much. Hope someday to find someone that is looking for my set of Brooks."

"I doubt if I could have done such & good job in editing a bulletin when I attended the University of Arizona where I was studying Mechanical Engineering as you have done this past year. More power to you."

"I think you are doing a fine job on the Brooks Family Bulletin."

"Thanks for your nice Index to BFB. I know it took lots of time. Keep up the good work. Enjoy each book and don't want to miss one."

"The Brooks Family Bulletin is so nice and I am proud of it and of you for being the Editor of this fine publication, Thank you so much for making it available to us. Thank you again for what you are doing; I am indeed grateful to you for it."

"As a former H.S. teacher and not too much of an 'oldster' myself (age 25), I want to congratulate you on your fine job in putting together the BFB. It is a credit to young people to have some of their number visibly achieve. Keep up the good work,"

To all of you, thanks for the encouragement when it was sorely needed. Below is a copy of the poem 'Hold Steady' by Ella Augusta Brooks.

Does the world seem to go wrong?
Ships there are that you can save,
Hold steady.
Tossing on the world's rough wave,
Won't your heart-strings vibrate song?
For self, alone, you must not slave
Hold steady
Hold steady.
Though the sea of life is rough,

The Captain's strength is quite enough
With your flag of faith aloft,
To guide the ship past every bluff.
Hold steady.
Hold steady.
Resue those have gone down oft,

Hold steady.
Do your lips refuse to sing?
Thrown overboard the weight of sin,
Hold steady.
Take up the oars and then begin,
Listen to the bird on wing.
To save the wrecks and bring them in,
Hold steady.
Hold steady.
Catch a strain of music sweet,

That will make your heart to beat,
Put your trust in God above,
Pass it on to all you meet,
Hold steady.
Hold steady.
He will fill your heart with love,

Hold steady.
There is a way to right all wrong.
In your strength you will fail,
Hold steady.
God with you can calm the gale,
Share with others Faith and song.
By faith in Him you'll safely sail.
Hold steady.
Hold steady.

Mrs Helen Whitson is to be commended for her effort to preserve Brooks history. We can all be proud that Mrs. Whitson is a genealogist interested enough in another' s family line to copy cemetery records which were being destroyed.

Brooks Cemetery, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee

"I copied all of these since this is a Brooks cemetery and these may all have a close connection to some Brooks. News of the slow destruction of the Brooks Cemetery located north of Shady Grove Road, east of White Station Road and west of Yates Road, near the suburban section of Memphis, Tennessee called White Station......Spring of 1952. At this time a road was being cut through the old cemetery and the iron fences, marble slabs, and tombstones were being desecrated by the building of a new sub-division The following stones were the only ones remaining to be copied, HMW"

My dear Niece:

I an sure you will be interested to know Ella "passed' on February 22. She was quite poorly all the fall but happy in her new home at Lowes City a trailer camp and about 100 cottages devoted mostly to elderly people. They had a trading center and auditorium for worship, etc. and a post office. The cottage Ella occupied had 4 rooms also a garage attached It was very pleasant there and so many people of her age. Lots of kind neighbors to get her groceries & and do other errands she could not do.

She was taken violently sick on the 17th (?) and they had to take her to a nurcing home near by and had a Dr. she passed away the 22nd. I was physically unable to go down and had to leave everything to the "Lowes City Office." A Miss Horton the book keeper looked after things and arranged for the nurcing home also the undertakers "Simmons Funeral Home." They had a funeral there - her Methodist Pastor, Rev. Paul Hortin DD officiated. Quite a number of her neighbors and friends attended. We sent flowers. They cremated the body and sent the ashes to me and "Huldies" (??) children Mrs. Burton Porter, Mrs. Don Nellist, Barker, N.Y. Howard Bloomfield and Kenneth Bloomfield, Rochester are to take the ashes to Candor, N.Y. our old home town and bury them in "Father's plot" in Cemetery there. Ella had previously put up a marker on the lot. We expect to have a commital service there Apr 4th as there are still a few early friends that may be present. We will miss Ella. She was always a jolly person and a good sister. She lived in St. Petersburgh, Fla. twenty years.

We trust this finds you both well. We "Edith and I manage to keep going in our 4 room apt. I rent the other two apartments,

Much love, Edward.

Dear Mary Lou : I am sending this on to you just in case anything should happen to me. Hope it will not until all is finished - a huge task I set myself to do. I am sending these as I finish them in installments as I cannot get to P.O. to mail a large pkg. - no way here and have to go on bus. I cannot yet. - but getting better every day. Love my cabin - four room house, Spinach, cukes, onions, carrots and many lovely flowers growing fine. Get four strawberries on plants a foot high. Tomatoes nearly ripe and lots of them. I had to make some changes in dates and names in the early history of England when I received a pamphlet of "Life of Henry I of Eng" a few weeks ago. I found we are descendants of a Timothy Brooke born in Holland 1552 and it meant a lot of matching up dates of births which is a real task if a hundred or more years ago; and no other way of getting the facts; but I got it and now only have to copy - so I decided to start with your family and copy all over again and send to you in sections as I know how much stamps to put on. I have no scales yet - decided to do it all in long hand as love to write, No glasses either.

Love, Aunt Ella.

The following material was contributed by Mrs. L. F. Dulany.

Letter dated March 29, 1956 from Ella Augusta Brooks to her niece , Mrs. James Dillie.

Dear Mary Lou:

About two weeks ago I received a copy of a Brooks record made by JOHN III in Chisne, England in the past part of the 17th century. It made me have to change my record -the early part of it so I have made a new copy. You can do what you like with the old one. Please let your sister in California and Ruth in Grand Rapids know I will get their copies done very soon. This takes it to your family only. I found we are Dutch; but sone early reletatives were born in England as you will see.

It had been a real job to get straight. My great grand father LEVI III and his grand-father of Chanse, England sent him the Brooke record on his (Levi's) 15th birthday anniversity. When he (Levi) entered the Revol. War he sent the record to his son Bethuel Brooks my grandfather so it would be kept safe. My father's sister had a copy and she died two years ago in Washington D.C. or near there and her daughter sent me the copy two weeks ago. Said she was looking over her mother's papers and found it. She had written on the back "Send this to Cousin Ella Brooks 51st Terrace and 71st St. N. St. Petersburg Fla." It went there and then came to me, I got busy right away and made your copy over and now am working on the others. I had four orders they had paid for and I had them all nearly copied to send; but thanks to good ball pens I could do very well even without glasses at 85 years.

Last week Wed. Mar 21 a reporter for the paper cam to see me for a story for the paper. I gave him facts and the enclosed clipping is the story - correct except I am 85 not 87 years old and I have one Persian-Siamese Kitty 2 1/2 yrs old seal brown with eyes of gold, short hair very lovable - too much sometimes - loves to have me rock him and sing a lullaby song I composed. It seems to be a different tune every time.

Give my love to Francis Sackett -Dear Old English Teacher! How I loved her but she didn't know it. I take Cantor paper so know she was in Evanston. More later. Love to all, Aunt Ella Augusta. I'll write Miss Sackett if you send her address.
